Capturing Clarissa

Capturing Clarissa - a sound recording by Dick Walker, in his own words.

Ensure the sound on your machine is turned up.

This recording was originally made by angling presenter Martin James for broadcast on his BBC Radio Lancashire angling show and was donated to me over a decade ago for publication on the web. Thanks to Martin for having the foresight and imagination to record this for angling posterity.

Brillant that Geoff and well done Martin for capturing it. People would think of a Ford Anglia and maybe remember the old box shape, but the one recounted in the story would have been with the mudguards and pointed nose, surely? Fair takes you back!

Great stuff, not just a history lesson but how things were done i.e welding a car in the night for ten bob. No chance of that now, having your car welded in the night.

When Geoff told me about this audio file (and once we'd figured out how to get the bloomin' thing to play) I could not believe what he had. This is surely angling gold - how often do you come across something like this that reaches back into the history of our sport and captures one of its defining moments. Hearing Richard Walker himself telling the story of how he came to capture probably the most famous carp in the world is a real treat. I echo the thanks to Martin James for capturing this originally and to Geoff for finally only taking 10 years to share it with us. Makes me wonder what other treasures you have up your sleeve!?

I couldn't play this in firefox but it worked in internet explorer. What does he mean when he says 'I cant say it was a very eventful fight' and then goes on to describe quite an prickly situation before getting in the net? I enjoyed hearing the story, thanks for putting it on the site

Magic. Thanks for sharing. Would be nice to hear a Chris Yates version too.

Interesting to listen to. Clearly he couldn't have landed it without Pete Thomas who near impaled himself to get it out of the brambles. I'm told by folk who knew him at the time that London Zoo weren't interested until he said he was going to offer it to Bristol Zoo, their great rivals. Interestingly, and many of you will already know this, Walker christened the fish Ravioli, perhaps because of its stuffed appearance.... it was so big, it was the angling press who persuaded him to change the name. When Chris yates caught the Bishop at 51lbs. the record was going to be refused him over witnessing issues. It was Walker who pressed for them to reconsider and persuaded them to award Yates the record. What an absloute gentleman ! There's a little more history here....... http://www.purepiscator.com/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=59 If I may be allowed to link to another forum. Sadly the thread deteriorates and gets a bit silly near the end. Touch of the Waterlogs, I fear.
