Opinion Piece - Is it just me?

Kevin Perkins puts the 'new' FM under the spotlight and questions the quality of article and forum contributions and contributors.

The following is an opinion piece by Kevin Perkins which you can read in full. Then follows my point by point replies to most of the issues that Kevin raises. Then it’s over to you FishingMagic members to offer your own views - Graham Marsden, Managing Editor

For a variety of reasons, (writes Kevin Perkins) which I won’t bore the reader with, I’ve been away from my keyboard for long periods of late. Now, one consequence of that is that I haven’t been sending my inane ramblings into FM with any regularity. In fact, my article writing (if you can call it that) output has dropped to almost zilch. I did manage to get one piece under the radar and onto the pages of Barbel Fisher (thanks, Fred!) and recently got conned into writing an article for my local Community News, circulation 11,000 no less.

That last piece was probably the hardest 600 words I have ever written. That was because with my ever so slightly sarcastic eye, the subject I was asked to cover was the goings-on of the remote controlled model yacht aficionados who ‘sail’ on our local lake. Given that these weekend admirals take their sport so seriously, to stand and watch grown men doing ‘dad-dancing’ movements with their remote controls in order to try and catch the slightest zephyr of wind, was almost more than I could take, let alone write a serious article about it. I did a lot of knuckle biting that day down on the lake I can tell you.

To give you a slight flavour of how difficult it was, I told the yacht club secretary that I was doing a half-page piece spotlighting their activities, and said any input would be welcome. The response came with a close typed, four page specifications of the models that they raced that the club would like to see included in full in the article.

A couple of times during my sabbatical, I have sat down and tried to write an article for FM. And by this, I mean the ‘new’ FM, of course. And there’s the rub, whereas I was positively garrulous in the past, I find I am struggling to find anything to write about now. Not only that, I wonder if my inane ramblings still ‘fit’ into the new FM format. Looking back, I could always find something to tie into a TickleTackle article. The ‘Silt-Walters’ series seems to have run its natural course, and the Donald and Damien** tales aren’t going any further.

But why is this? Well, whilst I desperately tried to not plagiarise or repeat anything when creating my writing niche, the inspiration of a lot, and I do mean a lot, of what I wrote came from the antics of the members in the forums on the ‘old’ FM. Usually a quick trawl through the forums would provide any number of little nuggets, which to someone like me who tries to find humour in observation was a rich vein to mine in an effort to find material for an article.

On the rare occasions when I couldn’t find anything to inspire my writing madness from the Forum, I could always turn to the Angling Times and Anglers Mail. But resorting to the weeklies to find something stupid/comical isn’t really a challenge; you normally don’t have to get more than three or four pages in before something catches your eye. Just to digress, there was a good one in the sports pages today where a report said that the (highly paid) spokesman for a (hugely overpaid) footballer accused of some misdemeanour declined to comment. Now that’s not a bad job, getting paid for not doing what you’re paid for.

Back to the writing, and not only did my inspiration come from the Forum, but also from the characters that used to inhabit it. And here I might be going out on a limb, but there was certainly more of an inclusive ‘club’ feel to the old FM, in fact it was bordering on almost like being part of a family, albeit of the cyber variety. And like all good families there were plenty of laughs, plenty of arguments, plenty of making friends, plenty of falling out, but always, there was a strong sense of belonging.

So much so, that the ‘old’ FM seemed to be a more united force, indeed it felt that we had a voice to be reckoned with, the site had opinions that counted.  Maybe the new site has watered down that message; perhaps it has become a lot less edgy, even sanitised to a degree. Now, perhaps it is just me, but the ‘new’ front page with ‘rolling’ articles reminds me of being in some foreign hotel room with CNN showing on the television. You know it’s on, but it just doesn’t grab your attention.

And maybe that’s the problem, because the shelf life and interest in the articles seems to be very short these days. Either they are not up on the site long enough, or perhaps the content isn’t deemed to be worthy of comment. I say this because an awful lot of them seem to pass through without raising a ripple of interest on the forums.  So, given this apparent lack of interest, have articles now just become a sideshow on the site?  If so, is that due to the quality of content, or is it the quality of the contributors who write the articles.

Maybe it’s become a vicious circle, with writers (or prospective contributors) not feeling that they can be bothered with the effort to put up articles that won’t be read or apparently appreciated. Or is it that the current members only skim through pieces because it’s perceived that the standard or content of the articles is not as high as it used to be in the past?

And speaking of articles in the past, it’s a shame that the new site doesn’t yet have all the old articles sorted and/ or archived, accessing the huge back catalogue of contributions isn’t easy for anyone wanting to browse previous pieces. But there again, perhaps no one actually wants to, so its it worth spending the time and effort cataloguing them all, and do the articles matter anyway?

It seems that the site is far more Forum driven now, with twelve separate categories of entries and 30 sub-divisions of those categories. In fact there is so much going on with the forums that you have to page down five times just to view all the headings. With such a plethora of opportunities to comment, everyone’s tastes must be catered for.

Or maybe this is all too much information, perhaps it is a scattergun approach, which misses more than it hits. Would less be more, and maybe a distillation of all this would bring about an improvement?  I’m not suggesting that the previous incarnation of the Forum was a cerebral sparring ground liberally peppered with inspired postings, bon mots, urbane ripostes and rapier wit, but in the past there appeared to be a higher quality to the posts, and posters, for that matter.

It has to be said that we do appear to have ‘lost’ a fair few members who were once respected, even famous (or in some cases infamous) but have now apparently been lost to the site. Whether they were worn down by continued negative comments or gave up due to apathy, we may never know, but having gone, are they ever likely to want to come back?

*And finally……..

Before the site switch over, I archived all ‘my’ old articles, just in case it all went t*ts up during the changeover. Whilst doing so, I collated all the Donald and Damien pieces together, tidied them up a bit, took some passages out and added a chapter or so. Having done all that, and just as a personal, maybe even selfish thing, I had one proof copy made up into a book, more as a memento than anything else.

The book is all ISBNed up and if I push the button, it could go on sale on Amazon tomorrow, but I don’t think it should. In a sense, Donald and Damien belonged to the members of the ‘old’ site. It was written for them and with them in mind, and sad to say, I feel that that rapport has now gone.

Given the lack of an online archive I also toyed with the idea of doing a compilation book containing the best bits of the ‘Alternative Angler’ series, again more for posterity than anything else. I even had the absolute temerity to ask Cliff Hatton to do some thumbnail sketches for chapter headings.  Having trawled through nearly 300 articles, the problem was to find enough passages that warranted the title of ‘Best Bits’ to fill a book.

A slim pamphlet maybe, but perhaps nowhere near enough for a volume of any note. Oh well, at least now I haven’t got to shell out for all those illustrations!

Graham Replies

A few of Kevin’s comments I agree with, some I don’t agree with, and some I don’t understand. Nowt new there then, some would say!

But let’s look at them point by point, and I’ll try to be as unbiased as possible, which won’t be easy as it’s my natural instinct, and my right, to defend the site against what I feel is unjust criticism.

Let’s start from the top.

“Whereas I was positively garrulous in the past, I find I am struggling to find anything to write about now.”

That happens to all of us who write regularly, nothing remarkable there. You just write your way through it and hope your efforts are at least up to your usual standard. Very often they’re better as you have to try harder.

“Not only that, I wonder if my inane ramblings still ‘fit’ into the new FM format.”

Apart from the different software that runs the site, and the actual design of the pages, there is no new format in the context I assume you mean. It hasn’t changed. We still accept interesting fishing articles from anyone who cares to submit them. If anything had changed regarding the type of article that's acceptable, or we now stifle free speech, this particular ‘inane ramble’ wouldn’t have seen the light of day.

“Looking back, I could always find something to tie into a TickleTackle article. The ‘Silt-Walters’ series seems to have run its natural course, and the Donald and Damien** tales aren’t going any further. A lot, and I do mean a lot, of what I wrote came from the antics of the members in the forums on the ‘old’ FM. Usually a quick trawl through the forums would provide any number of little nuggets, which to someone like me who tries to find humour in observation was a rich vein to mine in an effort to find material for an article.”

I can only assume you mean the antics of those who were responsible for driving away a few of the more sensible members with continual backstabbing and thread destruction. I have to assume that for, apart from Deanos who was quite unique and always good for a laugh, the rest are still here and at times as daft and humorous as ever.

“On the rare occasions when I couldn’t find anything to inspire my writing madness from the Forum, I could always turn to the Angling Times and Anglers Mail. But resorting to the weeklies to find something stupid/comical isn’t really a challenge; you normally don’t have to get more than three or four pages in before something catches your eye.”

This is one of the bits that I don’t understand; on the one hand you say it’s hard to find something to write about and on the other you say it’s no problem finding something in the weeklies. If it’s just more difficult to find something on the forum maybe we really do have a more mature, thinking readership after all! And that can’t be a bad thing providing the humour is still there, which it is in abundance.

“Back to the writing, and not only did my inspiration come from the Forum, but also from the characters that used to inhabit it. And here I might be going out on a limb, but there was certainly more of an inclusive ‘club’ feel to the old FM, in fact it was bordering on almost like being part of a family, albeit of the cyber variety. And like all good families there were plenty of laughs, plenty of arguments, plenty of making friends, plenty of falling out, but always, there was a strong sense of belonging.“

Apart from Deanos and maybe Baz, I can’t think of any other notable ‘character’ that’s missing, and like any gathering such as the forum, new characters have appeared as old ones disappeared. And I honestly think the forum is still like a family, at least that’s the feeling and impression I get. I’ve not met all the regulars but I feel as though I know them. I still find there are plenty of laughs, plenty of arguments, plenty of making friends, plenty of falling out, and always, a strong sense of belonging. The only thing that’s missing, I’m really pleased to say, is the nastiness that came from some of the characters who have disappeared for one reason or another. Think on too, that the 'club house' we meet in is new and different, and even though it's mainly the same members you need to give yourself chance to get familiar with the surroundings again. Perhaps you’re not spending long enough on the ‘new’ forum to appreciate the family atmosphere that still prevails.

“The ‘old’ FM seemed to be a more united force, indeed it felt that we had a voice to be reckoned with, the site had opinions that counted.  Maybe the new site has watered down that message; perhaps it has become a lot less edgy, even sanitised to a degree.”

The ‘new’ FM is still run by me, and I have the same attitude towards running it as I always have, which is for it to be the voice of all anglers who want to have a say (within decency and legality), either through articles or on the forum. If the inference is that somebody is pulling my strings then that inference is very wrong. Editorially, including the forum, that is 100% under my management and if that should ever change I’ll be out the door faster than Ron can say ‘Dick Walker’. We still have a voice to be reckoned with and opinions that count. If you could read my private emails from many very important sectors of angling you would know that.

“The shelf life and interest in the articles seems to be very short these days. Either they are not up on the site long enough, or perhaps the content isn’t deemed to be worthy of comment. I say this because an awful lot of them seem to pass through without raising a ripple of interest on the forums.  So, given this apparent lack of interest, have articles now just become a sideshow on the site?  If so, is that due to the quality of content, or is it the quality of the contributors who write the articles?”

Articles are on the home page longer than they were on the old site and we have four running headline images instead of one. Almost every article has a thread with my name on it started from it automatically. I reckon the content is as good, if not better, than ever, with a greater variety of contributors. There always have been, and always will be, articles passing through that don’t raise any comment. The forum has always been the greatest participant part of the site (naturally) and articles are being read as much as ever. The quality of the contributors is not for me to say, as I’m one of them, so the members can offer their opinion on that one. As for articles not being up on the site long enough, the oldest article on the current home page is well over two months old and the oldest news item is exactly one month old, and the oldest headline article at the top has been there for more than a week, so I don’t know how we can be expected to have them on the home page for longer yet still have a realistic and healthy turnover.

“Maybe it’s become a vicious circle, with writers (or prospective contributors) not feeling that they can be bothered with the effort to put up articles that won’t be read or apparently appreciated. Or is it that the current members only skim through pieces because it’s perceived that the standard or content of the articles is not as high as it used to be in the past?”

I’m puzzled as to how you’ve worked out that the articles are not read or appreciated. Is the standard or content not as high as it used to be? The members can answer that, but if we’re still comparing the old site to the new site, the contributors, to the forum and articles, who stopped contributing before the new site was born, don’t come into the equation. Also, simply because an article may disappear off the home page without comment, or without the writer being told how good he is, doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't worthy of comment or that it wasn't appreciated.

“And speaking of articles in the past, it’s a shame that the new site doesn’t yet have all the old articles sorted and/ or archived, accessing the huge back catalogue of contributions isn’t easy for anyone wanting to browse previous pieces. But there again, perhaps no one actually wants to, so its it worth spending the time and effort cataloguing them all, and do the articles matter anyway?”

Yes, it is a shame, but as I’ve pointed out probably a dozen times previously, a lot of data was either lost or corrupted during the transfer from the old platform to the new one, and that we will put this right over time. Fish and Fly Ltd is only a small team compared to Magicalia. But if it wasn’t for Fish and Fly there would be no FishingMagic to moan about. As for no one wanting to look at old articles that’s a hell of a contradiction being as you’re intimating in one breath that the older articles are perceived as better quality.

“It seems that the site is far more Forum driven now, with twelve separate categories of entries and 30 sub-divisions of those categories. In fact there is so much going on with the forums that you have to page down five times just to view all the headings. With such a plethora of opportunities to comment, everyone’s tastes must be catered for.”

“in the past there appeared to be a higher quality to the posts, and posters, for that matter.”

I don’t know about forum driven but I certainly realise that the forum is, and always has been, a very important part of the site and I make no apologies for the new forum offering a plethora of opportunities to comment and for it trying to cater for everyone’s taste. As for the old forum having higher quality posts and posters, I disagree; since some of the idiots and trolls have been ridded out I think the quality of both has gone up considerably. Page down five times? That depends on your screen and resolution, it takes me three times. The old site averaged 300 to 400 posts per day, yesterday the new site clocked up 359 posts. If you think back to the time before the days of forums and blogs and social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, when fishing magazines had several lively letter’s pages, they were the pages that most anglers turned to first to follow the debates between contributors and readers. It’s no different today, but the letter pages are forums.

“It has to be said that we do appear to have ‘lost’ a fair few members who were once respected, even famous (or in some cases infamous) but have now apparently been lost to the site. Whether they were worn down by continued negative comments or gave up due to apathy, we may never know, but having gone, are they ever likely to want to come back?”

Who are these fair few members who have gone since the birth of the new site?

I know of a few who went before the old site died,  but quite who are the ‘respected and famous’ ones you refer to? If you mean those who appear in angling journals, ie, Gary Knowles, Bob Roberts, Andy Nellist, Wol, Matt Brown, Lee Swords and one or two who have sadly passed away (apologies to any I’ve missed who may fit into the ‘respected and famous’ bracket who at some time wrote for FM, but I mean no disrespect, just a bad memory, and I haven't included current contributors), they’re still around but don’t post as often. Neither do I, come to that. Were they worn down by ‘continued negative comments’? You mean from the ‘characters’ you drew your inspiration from?

Mark Wintle has recently retired and is busy getting his life in order and working on other projects to boost his income, although he still finds time to make occasional contributions. I don’t know of any other regular writer, other than yourself, and you’ve given your reasons above, who isn’t still contributing. Other than those who stopped a long, long time ago, long before the old site died. But I dare bet that there are more new articles and news items going up each week than ever went onto the old site. We’re lacking where reviews are concerned but again, that will be put right very soon.

“In a sense, Donald and Damien belonged to the members of the ‘old’ site. It was written for them and with them in mind, and sad to say, I feel that that rapport has now gone.”

I don’t get that one, they’re the same members, the majority of them coming over to the new site, plus a great many new ones who’ve joined since the new site launched, many of whom are joining in and bonding really well. There will always be a turnover of members. The readers of the angling weeklies will not be the same readers from five years ago. As for not having a 'rapport' with the forum now I have a feeling that isn't going to get any better.....

Far be it from me though to try to claim that all is well with the new site, and I think there is an element of truth in some of the things Kevin says, but nothing like as bad as he seems to be suggesting. I think the quality of our article writers and articles is as good as ever, and also the quality of our forum posts and posters; in many respects I think the latter is better. We’re busy working on ironing out the bugs and improving the new site every single day (I may be paid for only two days a week but believe me, I do far more than that) and given time we’ll iron out most, if not all, of the things that don’t work quite right since the move. We’ve got some interesting threads going at the moment, and there are some decent articles on the home page. It’s a new team running the new FM and we just need time to get it absolutely right. The old FM was 10 years old, the new one is less than 10 months old. We certainly have the determination. My personal opinion is that Kevin, although basing his opinions on elements of truth, is not being fair to either me or the current FM team, its contributors and posters.  Or should it be me asking - 'Is it Just Me?'

Anyhow, it’s over to the members to discuss the points that Kevin raises. Please don't confine your views to simple 'I agree/disagree' but explain why. Thanks, Graham.

Opinion Piece

It's true, we all have the chance to voice an opinion on the forum, but the forum is read by only a fraction of those members who read the editorial part of the site.

If you have an interesting opinion, and want it read by the maximum number of visitors to FishingMagic, then this is the place for it. The debate will still continue on the forum just the same, but it gets a hell of a bigger kickstart when it begins life on the front page.

If you have an interesting opinion about anything to do with fish or fishing then send it to me at graham@fishingmagic.com. Make it at least 500 words and a maximum of 1500, with an image or two where appropriate.

Interesting article Kevin (and response Graham). I think that the site has merely evolved, nothing more, nothing less. As with any changes there will be good and bad, depending on your viewpoint. I still prefer the 'old' yellow and blue format and the particular font and layout that went with it (circa 2003). I liked the simplicity and minimalist style of the 'old' forum headings, but as I troll via 'new posts' anyway the new forum style doesn't hurt me. As for characters 'lost' the only ones whose contributions I actually genuinely 'miss' are Bazza and Deano, any others who have permanently left I honestly hadn't noticed they've gone, or maybe I've just forgot (sorry!). That said, I do believe that the site still has plenty of 'characters' old and new. There are also a decent number of regular forum contributors whom I don't 'know of' which implies to me that 'active' new member recruitment is reasonable. I don't read that many articles I'm ashamed to say, but of those I have read recently I wouldn't say any were poorly written, the editorial team are too good for that to happen. Likewise, forum contributions, I asked a centrepin question last night, the responses are superb. If I create a 'crisp' thread I will also get appropriate responses. All said and done, it's still a very new site, well established with a bit of history, but still shiny new. However we all get fed up sometimes, so when you're on a bit of a downer with something to do with this site, try this simple test, seriously. Simply google the word 'fishingmagic' then look at (but don't click) the 3rd hit down!

I see no real change between the new and the old site.

I was only a member of the old FM for a short time, and i didn't post no where near as often, as i have on this new site. Sometimes, in all walks of life, when you ask what is an extremely important question for you, it isn't always an important issue for others, and that is why you sometimes getting very few or no responses what so ever. I am no where near an accomplished Angler, but, even i am guilty of treating New Anglers with what can be deemed as, my god i can not believe that they are asking such a simple question, isn't it obvious to them what the answer is ? Tha answer to that is obviously, no they are not, which is why they are asking, again, some people feel that the question has been asked so many times in the past it isn't worth answering. When i do post a serious reply to a question (ok, not often) it is to educate others, not so that i can have a big pat on the back, i do it because i know that i was in their position once, and i will probably more than likely be in that position again, and i would like to think that someone would go out of their way to help and advise me (and they have on numerous occassions) on this new FM and the Old one as well. It is difficult to come up with new ideas, and questions to post on to FM, that have not already been covered numerous times in the past (i have raised this in earlier threads) and, i for one, sometimes feel uncomfortable by keep asking people questions on how, why, where etc as i sometimes feel like i am badgering them. I didn't join FM all them years ago (well 2 years actually) to make friends, i joined to try and learn as much about the sport that i love, as i could. The fact that i like to think i have made some online friends along the way, for me, is an additional bonus, to which i am grateful, but, i in no way take for granted. Thank you to everyone who has made FM possible to us Anglers, and thank you to everyone who contributes to FM because without them, FM would be dead in the water, and a lot of beginners to Angling would struggle to learn, and a lot of People wouldn't have made the friends and associates that they have. Love it, or Hate it, it is Legendary and a God send to Anglers like me. Your challenge should be to find something better than this, because, for me it just doesn't exist. Don't moan about how Bad you may feel it has become, contribute to it and make it better (If indeed you can).

I have to say, that I thought that FishingForum's may have passed their sell by date, and at the time of Magicalia's withdrawal and indeed Graham's "retirement". I thought it was perfect timing. Not certain I have changed my views (yet), but with so many other offerings available, such as twitter & facebook and the up and the ever increasingly popular personal blog, there is a lot of distraction for those who think they know it all, and don't want to keep responding to the usual questions. There are also those, who think they know it all, and do not accept that others have an opinion or view, and soon put an end to interesting threads with their "bullyboy" ( sorry can't think of a better expression)tactics. My view also with Kevin, is that he started,as I recall, before the closure of old FM, to wonder if it was all worth it, as more often than not his contributions appeared to be ignored. I know from personal experience, at the time of my very first article for FM, the disappointment I felt when the only real subject of response was what I had put in my breakfast sandwich! That article was hard work for my first time ever effort, and I suppose I was looking for encouragement to do another. Perhaps for both of us and others who have contributed,a reader count would have helped and encouraged further effort? My starting point was,Fishing Forums may be past their sell by date, I'm yet to be persuaded otherwise I'm afraid. It could be that as I have got older, I've lost interest in talking fishing, the fun has gone. So,perhaps I should concentrate more on actually fishing.

I think, if you or anyone else feels that way about FM, then you should be asking yourselves, what if anything did you want from FM when you joined. That way you can see what you got, did you achieve what you set out to get, and if you have, what has made you stay as long as you have. Dare i say, that some of the responses i have heard regarding FM sounds like "Apathy" to me .................. I'm alright Jack, so why should i bother anymore. :wh Remember this, you may not be getting anything out of it anymore for yourselves, but, you may be contributing hugely to someone else who needs it (Is that not enough)?

Can't help but add my contribution to this by agreeing with almost everything Graham has written in his reply, but then (in the words of the infamous Mandy Rice-Davies) "I would, wouldn't I." seeing as he is head-honcho, the big cheese, numero-uno still. And that is the one key factor that has not altered, Graham is still IC (in charge). The period after the announcement of the closure of the old site was very damaging indeed and even the buy-out by Fish And Fly didn't seem to overwhelm everyone with joy. As Graham has said though, were it not for Fish and Fly (and owner Richard Hewitt) we wouldn't be here at all. We all were aware that changes would be made to the format of the site and when it came about it did look somewhat different. Therein lies the big problem - different. Some people take a while to get used to things being different, it doesn't feel right, it's not the same, and to that attach much more blame than is warranted. In the Data Processing industry, we branded people like that R.T.C. (Reluctant To Change), but in time they usually accepted the new ways of doing things and soon enough became staunch supporters of the new methods. I hope the same happens with Kevin in time. Similarly, some people grow really attached to their old cars, wonderful pieces of engineering and reliable as the air we breath. And then they change through necessity and the new car is never quite as good and it gets criticized at every turn until - through necessity, they get another new car. The old one is then held up as the perfect model they will miss forever. Kevin, with all due respects, are you one of these people? This site is different and it's not yet how I would like it (Graham and our Techy man will tell you how many times I complain about the look or feel of something, how it could be more "punchy" and less "judy"), but things will only change in time. As GM said, we don't have the staff to change as quickly as Magicalia did, but look at the list of sites they had - golf, outdoors, woodworking, cycling, even having babies for pete's sake. I miss Kevin's weekly meanderings a lot and I only said to Graham a couple of days ago that we should revive the Donald and Damien stuff and the Silt/Walters letters and re-post it. The editorial rules have certainly NOT changed and I can swear to the fact that Richard (the owner) has never interfered nor even commented on any article that has been published under his new banner. So let's quash that rumour for a start. I do have a problem in that we get stuff that has no picture, such as Kevin's, but his has been sorted now. We do need pictures, one at least if only for the headline on the front page. Often we get the author to submit one to us, but if we have to go trawling the websites it has to be royalty free, so we don't pay for it. That is the only restriction now, if that's what you can call it. Just to sum up, I think this website is a reflection on life. People come, people go, some sadly not of their own free will like Barrie Rickards recently. We miss them when they do go, but as one commentator said "In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on." (Robert Frost) Stick with it, Kevin, it will improve and be all the better for everyone's input.

It wasn't to cause you offence in anyway, but, just how i read it and interpreted it. No offence taken, even though your opinion was aimed at me, and not generalised, hence my view that my opinion was specific to FM. I have to disagree with you Fred, It was not aimed at you in a personal level, it was in response to your personal opinion. As it was a comment to FM, that is what we are FM. I digress, we are in agreement that no offence was meant, or taken, that is enough for me.

I'm a relative newcomer to FM (18 months or so), have never met any of the forum regulars nor attended any of FM meets/events, and primarily use the forums. I joined when I returned to angling when I retired, primarily to learn. In that I've been successful, and hopefully have answered a few questions myself. However, I've thought that of late (and really since the switch over), the forums have lost a lot: there's just not the meat there was before. I can't be specific, but there are fewer posts of interest or value. Somehow we lost momentum with the transition to the new site, and have yet to regain it. I do also now get the feeling that the quality of debate has declined, and that thread hi-jacking - or at least diversion - has become more prevalent: someone asks a question, and gets 3 or 4 responses which don't address the question at all but make some tangential and trivial observation or head off somewhere else altogether. This must be frustrating for all concerned, not least the original poster, and erodes the value of the forum. I make little use of other areas: tackle reviews are mostly beyond their use-by date; the main articles are generally good reads, but insufficient in number (and I understand the reasons why - I'm not criticizing Graham), and the other content I find of little value. So, in my view the site is not what it was, but I still visit every day to see what's going on, to learn and to contribute where I can.

To a great extent you're right Fred, but that observation is not specific to FM. All community websites, including fishing, have lost visitors to the almighty blog and social networking sites. Several years ago it was the angling print media that lost out to internet sites and it was being widely predicted by those who love to see the negative side of things that angling newspapers and magazines were as good as dead. I said at the time that there was room for both and both would find their niche and learn how to interact with each other. Now you won't find a magazine that hasn't got its own website with each promoting the other. The same will happen with websites/forums and the bloggers; they'll find their own niche, the weak will go under and the rest will learn how to live with each other. None of them will ever reach the good old days before blogging became popular, but that doesn't mean they're finished by any means. We just have to try harder, offer blogging (as we do) for those who want it, and offer the best we can with what we've got. I just want to kill the notion that this change is specific to FM because contributors and posters are lacking in quality. It's as EC says: "the site has merely evolved, nothing more, nothing less."

And I thought the forum of late has had some really interesting debates about various topics, but yes, the site did lose momentum; it was inevitable in the upheaval of switching from one platform to another. As for thread hijacking Neil, it was the most popular complaint on the old site!

I view Thread Hi jackings as nothing more than a normal conversation, a subject is raised, it is debated, this triggers other subjects to be raised, and in the speed and heat of the moment things can diversify, but, i do not believe they cause or mean any naughtiness in it, annoying as it may be to some people, it can actually turn in to a very lively discussion.

And Jeff won't know about all the times I ask for some design change, etc, but with only one technical man at Fish and Fly, compared to an office full of them at Magicalia there is only so much he can do.

In the dark depressing period when the future of FM was in peril a lot of members including me regrouped via Facebook ,plans were afoot by some members to set up a new website ,members exchanged contact numbers and it seemed that if FM sank without a trace the sheer determination to survive as a group would see some form of FM continuing. Now thanks to the efforts of a few not least Graham Marsden here we are safe in the "NEW" fishing magic ,ok it is not exactly what it was but it's all we have and I am very grateful for that and so should anyone who is a member . life is very rarely perfect but we have to get on with it and make the most of what we have,to those that for reasons I do not understand have all but abandoned this site I say just remember the uncertainty we had and be grateful we have got this site .

My feelings exactly Slime. I joined face book to be part of that Angling Group, but i didn't really get on with using Facebook. I like the new FM, i don't want all jingly jangly fancy trimmings, i quite like having the ability to chat to other members, and share knowledge with other members and of course to learn off other members. I would like to get more involved with Meets and Fish ins etc in the future, but, for now i am happy with the free website that FM is to all of us.

was only a member of the old FM for a short time, and i didn't post no where near as often, as i have on this new site. Entirely laudable sentiments SV. I feel the same way as you about nearly all of this... Yet again you save me a lot of time!

It's a great way to get Feed Back from everyone and in an honest and open way too. Some people do not like to give Feed Back incase it is misconstrude as them being Negative, this way, they almost feel like they have been given permission. It's always good to have big bold characters in all walks of life, because it helps those that are not so confident to blend in, but without it being to obvious that they are there.

As for Deanos, well I spoke to him just a few weeks ago and he's in disgrace, I'm afraid. Reason being, He's been working so hard he's lost 15 stone and was in danger of winning Weightwatchers Slimmer Of The Year. Instead, he decided to lock himself up in his auntie Kath's garage again with the remaining stock of donkey pies and won't come out until he's regained all of his weight loss. Is it not about time that we all THROUGH away our so called axes and get them (ex-members) back. Baz & Deano's were like little and large, really good laugh and when things did get a bit HOT they were the ones that cam-ed things down in there own laughable way. Jimmy, no diss' mate, but this is the wrong thread to be discussing Baz and Deanos on. In my humble opinion. Any failings that FM has, as Kevin has tried to highlight, in his opinion, aren't down to two members. I love Deanos and Baz, but Graham had to call it the way he did. Perhaps it could have gone to the 'new' poll, but at the end of the day Graham is the Boss. I hope Deanos and Baz return to FM, I honestly do miss them. in the past there appeared to be a higher quality to the posts, and posters, for that matter.” I don’t know about forum driven but I certainly realise that the forum is, and always has been, a very important part of the site and I make no apologies for the new forum offering a plethora of opportunities to comment and for it trying to cater for everyone’s taste. As you can see Stealph was hard at it :) I agree that the old site was a special place. It had a strangely exclusive feel to it without a them and us atmosphere, everyone was like a family. However, the family are still here and we have new members coming in daily as before but this site feels more......encompassing...... open..... bigger.... I can't put my finger on it. It's not worse, it's the people who make the community and the same fantastic people are here (I know some post less or not at all but the core is the same). I've always enjoyed Kevin's contributions to the site, his observations can be eye watering so hopefully you will find your groove again soon.

Fingers in my eyes .................... I'm not listening LALALALALALALALALALALA Personally, i am very disappointed with some of the views i have read so far regarding FM. It is a free website, where anglers can meet up with other anglers from all other the country and all over the world, how often do we as anglers get that opportunity from the comforts of our own homes. Anglers can, post articles about fishing, and fishing related topics, anglers can read, and even learn things about angling in these postings. Anglers can have discussions on the forum about Angling and if they're feeling a little cheeky they can post non angling topics in bait box, they can and do make friends with other like minded anglers, which in all honesty, probably wouldn't have happened with out the adage of the FM Website. Yet, some still want more than that, it's free, it's on the whole friendly and welcoming, it's no where near as strict as some websites of this kind .................. why is this not enough ?? It is for me, but perhaps i am just happy with the simple pleasures in life

I have no problem with the new site , I get what I need , good articles , information from the forum and a bit of banter now and again . But there is lack of " old members" ,posting , I know that Graham can`t think of more than 3 , I can`t put a name to any of them , but I know that they are missing:confused: Someone said of late that the old site was like one big faimly , which is spot on ,but I`m sorry to say , it doesn`t feel like that on this site , which is a tad sad .:(

Les, do you think that's because we've changed home, because I honestly can't think of many 'old members' who are missing. There are a few who don't post as often granted, but nothing more than that. Moving home can disrupt a family, and I don't see why it should be any different with a cyber family. But that's usually only until we all settle in properly. After all, most who say they detect a change can't put their finger on why, so what else can it be?

Well, the first of what may be several apologies, as I’m posting this from my ‘lurking’ temporary sign on. I’m in between mode at the moment, in between homes, new one built, still got 3 months to go on a renter and in between jobs, moving away and too far to commute. First and foremost let me say that I have the utmost respect and admiration for Graham, both with what he has achieved with the site (old and, thank God, the new) and for putting up with my inane rambling for seven years, and even more than that, for having the courage to unleash them to you, the unsuspecting and public. The article is published under the ‘Opinion Piece’ banner and as such, is just that, my opinion. Graham took the time to answer all the concerns I raised, and those points were by and large very well answered. When I submitted the piece, I did tell Graham that I had written and re-written it several times, I had rambled on to over 2000 words at one point (it’s below 1500 now) and I still wasn’t sure that what I said was what I felt. But you know how it is with us men, very hard to explain your feelings, let alone write about them.....! I am fully aware that the old and new sites are different, and that different doesn’t mean ‘not as good’ But it is interesting that several of those who have commented on the article have mentioned that something is ‘missing’ and they can’t explain what it is, and if they can’t, what chance have I got trying to put that feeling into words? I think that the point I made that it now seems that many of the articles pass without comment is valid. To those who take the time to contribute, the excitement of seeing your work accepted and put up on screen is completely dashed when it appears that no-one has apparently read it, let alone taken the trouble to comment , good or bad on what they’ve just read. As to ‘missing’ members, again, I accept that a lot of the old ‘uns are still here, and may well be posting and contributing less, the membership of any organisation is a movable feast. But what is filling the void that they are leaving what is rushing into the vacuum? Volume is no substitute for quality, there may be more posts, but is the quality and/or content the same...? Cont...... ---------- Post added at 16:56 ---------- Previous post was at 16:54 ---------- Part 2....... As to my own efforts, the lack of archive means that I (and all the other long term contributors) have no real ‘provenance’ on the site now. Jeff said he has talked to Graham about re-running the ‘Silt-Walters Letters’ but they were written with quite a narrow readership in mind, and that may not be relevant now. Likewise, a lot of the Alternative Angler’ pieces were contemporary when they were first written and published, their relevance would not be meaningful now. I said in the article that I tried desperately not to plagiarise or repeat anything in the articles I have written over the years. It may well be that the ‘Donald and Damien’ stories were formulaic, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, plenty of TV comedies over the years have trodden a well-worn path without their popularity waning to any great degree. In my opinion, a re-run of old articles isn’t really the way to go on FM. I accept that it’s OK for the weeklies to just rotate four versions of the same article, pellet fishing with the waggler, waggler fishing using pellets, the pellet/waggler approach, tactics for waggler/pellet fishing etc. etc. ad nausea, but I would hope that FM members expect a little bit more variety in their articles.... Steve Spiller asked about a report from me on the Chavs v Aces match. Again, anything I write will only be relevant to the thirty or so people who were there, and if I turned my jaundiced keyboard onto one particular incident, for instance, it would cause far more upset than it would entertainment. I might have done that a while ago, but not now. I hope the satirical inspiration comes back soon, I doubt it will be back up the weekly output that I reached on the ‘old’ site, but I still hope I can do enough to make a worthwhile contribution Regards Kevin

The 'funny' thing is, I agree that 'something' is missing, but I question whether it's quality of content or more a case of what I've already broached with Les; is it simply a case of us moving home and it's taking us time to settle in? Kevin, you will know better than most what it feels like to move home, as you're in the thick of it right now, and I can tell by some of the things you've written that you're obviously unsettled and will be glad when you've moved and settled in. But you also probably know that it won't go without a hitch - these things never do - and if you liken moving home to moving data from one web site to another, and the bloody removal men let you down and lose some furniture and destroy some, and on top of that you've got to buy new furniture and hope everybody likes it, you probably see where I'm coming from. All I'm asking is that our small team of removal men are given time to restore some furniture, replace some, and hope the family comes to like the new stuff.

Kevin, It's got to come from your heart mate, you are very funny. You're a quiet bloke in the flesh, I looked at you last time we met and thought what's going round in his head? You can look at a situation and find humour in it, I spose that's what makes you a good writer. The Aces v Chavs was just a 'for instance'. I remember one piece you did where all the characters were FM members, I think you used me as 'Grumpy' (can't understand why?) :D That made me feel like part of the FM family. Maybe some of the family have moved away or just post less, but FM still is a family of like minded anglers. I can think of more than 3 members who have gone or don't post anymore, but I'm not gonna write a list of them because it's pointless. I miss them, but for whatever reason they have made their choice. I've also said before that I've not commented on your articles, that didn't mean I didn't like them, I just chuckled to myself. A counter of 'views' on articles would be a good idea I think, at least if no one comments on them you will see that members are reading your articles. Stop feeling down in the dumps mate, use the new and old members for inspiration. I hope you will do a Christmas one this year. Good luck with the house and job.

I thought about putting together a post on this subject until I read Xplorers offering........and then decided that what he said just about echoed my own thoughts!! I cannot say why I still miss the old FM layout-I wish I could-but the new offering just seems a little less personal, for example,I no longer have my own collection of Threads of mine and others which I used to refer to from time to time etc etc.Perhaps it all sounds rather silly in a way...that I'm not open minded to change....perhaps thats also an age thing in a way.....who knows? Nevertheless I do still log on most days,I still try to offer advice and often put up Threads that may be of interest NOT necessarily because I want an answer but because I think others might learn from them! I suppose its like anything these days, interest seems to wane very quickly and content beit FM(or a programme on tele)just starts to become boring after similar threads start to repeat or a TV programme runs yet another series when the viewing figures are already dropping...... Still,it is still okay(ish) and generally interesting(but I do avoid threads that go off on stupid tangents or when obvious friends start to use it a conversation service!!)and I will continue to partake in the immediate future.........

in complete disbelief ................. i give in :p Let me try to put this in to perspective for you all. It's Free. It's yours to do pretty much as you please with, so long as you stay with in the very loose rules that Graham and his team ask of us. If things are not how you would like them to be it is because you are not making them how you would like them to be. It has sod all to do with the wallpaper on the walls or the carpets on the floor or the odd chair out of place. It is because you and you alone are not making it home. Get over it, get in to it and pack in the whingeing ................... god that really irritates me. Oh i forgot to swear lots and lots in there somewhere, forgive me :D V

To those who take the time to contribute, the excitement of seeing your work accepted and put up on screen is completely dashed when it appears that no-one has apparently read it, let alone taken the trouble to comment , good or bad on what they’ve just read. How can you measure whether anyone has read it or not, Kevin? Surely not by the comments? I'll give an example, my report (part 1) of our International Pike Challenge, just how many posts did that encourage? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. One! and that from Stealph Vider who was complaining that the article couldn't be viewed, a fault (maybe mine) where the thread was started automatically before the article went live. Graham made the other two posts to apologise and then to say that the articel was up. Since then, not one single comment. Does this mean that my piece completely missed the mark? Should I bother writing a second part to it, and then the final part? Should I bother writing ever again if I can't get people to post? Personally, I don't want members to come on a say "What a brilliant article....", forgive me for saying, but it sounds too much like self-indulgence. Of course I would like people to read all of our articles and I do have an idea of how many at least called it up on their screens. As Graham himself once said, perhaps the reason no one is postign is because you've checked all of the boxes and they have no questions or comment to make - it's perfect. (I would like to think that.) I do wonder how many people read every story in every daily newspaper and do the reporters consider it a failure if not one letter of praise or complaint is sent in? I frankly doubt it and they would probably say, so long as they pay me...... Sadly, we don't pay as it's a community site, but I reckon you can take comfort in the fact that so many regulars are missing your weekly missives and brain busting, belly wobbling (through laughter) contributions. Look at this very thread, I can't get this kind of response with upsetting them with Loop Methods and Death Rigs . We must meet up again soon and I may make a recommendation for a change of medication. Or perhaps, it's just winter and you've not enjoyed the summer so much what with the disruption and all. A blanking session is what's called for, or a b*rb*l session! :D ---------- Post added at 18:49 ---------- Previous post was at 18:46 ---------- is it simply a case of us moving home and it's taking us time to settle in? I agree there. When you move house the new one never feels like yours until you've redecorated every room. Perhaps members could suggest a new colour scheme for FM.

is it simply a case of us moving home and it's taking us time to settle in? Like the imagery...bit like my Rugby Club...we have combined with the other local sports clubs and as a result of selling land to a national builder we now have a Club house which is regarded as one the best in the North West; probably the best of any "Junior" Club. All visiting clubs are pretty envious. === but...we still have to get used to it...and we do miss the comforting familiarity of the decrepit old clubhouse..with its wood panels, battered furniture and memories...however give us time...cos the folk haven't left (and indeed we've recruited new exciting members from Brazil, South Africa, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Australia and Stockport)......OK so we've only really added Stealph... so that's where the metaphor falls down a bit.....:p;):wh:w

So many things to comment on......... Mark, I know what you mean about other writers getting the credit for your articles, every time I do a piece about trotting or fishing for mullet everyone thinks you wrote it.... Woody Amanda (or at least her inspiration, the blonde triplet) has moved to to the Middle East, and we may not see her like again, I'm afraid. Steve You wonder what's going on in my head - welcome to my world...!!! Several members (including Graham) have commented that there is a feeling that they just can't put their finger on. I think I now know have a food analogy that describes it exactly. The new site is like an 'All you can eat' Chinese buffet. Mountains of food, dozens of choices where you can keep on trying different dishes until you are completely and utterly stuffed. Then an hour later, you get those little pangs of hunger again.... The old site was like a Lamb Stew, only a few diferent ingredients, a helping of veg, the odd tasty bit of meat, an occasional lump of gristle, maybe a bit of bone that would get stuck in your throat, but all held together with a rich gravy that would have you looking for a a slice of bread to mop the bowl clean at the end. And you would have a nice warm feeling for hours afterwards. Am I close with that description......... ???

Am I close with that description......... ??? Mmmmmmmm. maybe we're getting closer. Anyway, we've got me with the house moving analogy and you with your food analogy, so how about a sex analogy? The new FM has got too many g-spots and by the time you find 'em all you're spent. But it can still be good fun hunting them down.;)

Kevin, I've run out of ideas on trotting and mullet so why don't we swap? I'll do some humour and you do the trotting and mullet - mullet fishing on the Grand Union should be novel... Like you I look forward to seeing some of the archives re-built but I know it's a lot of work to even piece one together, and in the meantime there are new articles to sort out. At the moment it does seem like Stealph Viper world on the forums though...

Using the analogy idea I'd liken the change over of FM to when I used to have a software update at work. I did not like having to start learning new methods etc., but after a while the learning became easier and eventually the new became the "old" and just as I got used to the present version a new update would appear and the process would start again. Initially I would criticise the new and feel the old was far superior because I understood it, knew its pitfalls and the old had that familiar safe feel about it. BUT if I went back to an old version, something that was possible with this software, then it was soon apparent that the new version was far superior to the old version. I wonder what the the feelings of members would be like if say after using this new version of FM for two years it was possible to go back to the old platform? Would the old platform seem old and outdated? I feel the new site is fine and I've had no problems with it.

I cant see the slightest bit of diffrence between this and the old site in terms of the forums and characters. I'm sure other groups of users find the site every bit as inclusive as your own particular group of freinds did on the old site. Graham, are you still accepting pieces from us also rans for the site?

as far as i can tell there's little difference to the old site. the daft sods are still here, admittedly different ones but they're still daft. the articles are still as good as before. fred's still whingeing that it's not like the old site and we're all doomed. possibly the only difference is there's a bit less actual fishing discussion going on, but that's possibly down to the disappearance of a few of the old contributors. rik, stu, budgey, roto, dave slater. not seen malc about for a while. add to this that kevins got tired, not surprising he feels a bit jaded considering the ammount of stuff he's put out over the years i managed 3 bad articles and ran out of steam he's done more than that in a week and all at a higher standard. the old family is still there and i would hope we still welcome everyone into it.

Thanks, Kevin for your thoughtful opinion piece. It is so difficult to put into words a ‘feeling’ about something as intangible as the changes you describe. As Graham agrees there is ‘something’ that he can’t put his finger on, and yes it does matter. As an article contributor I have experienced the excitement of waiting for my article to appear and the disappointment when there are only a few replies. I had twenty odd responses once but it was only some half-wit complaining that somebody must have been fishing out of season! Like you I’ve had a ‘bad’ year with house related issues requiring my time, I’ve got two or three more article ideas I’d like to complete but I haven’t had the time. I’m sure your creative juices will get flowing again, just look at the response you’ve had this time! The site needs more time to grow into itself; I log on nearly every day if possible. I’m not much of a poster but I love reading the forums. My thought processes are not quick enough to make rapid responses. Andy

Can you make it pink Jeff? Perhaps you're on the wrong site entirely Sean, Gaymagic is here hahah! And I bet you tried it! ______________________________________________________________________ Seriously, I just looked at one of the old sites, Thinkcamera, that is still going despite the threats to close it. Albeit there's nothing been published on there for a long long time and the last post was two months ago, I think. Still, it's interesting to make a comparison. And my conclusion is - that much of it is the same except the colours and the more cramped space given to articles that we also had on Fishingmagic. Aside the central column was the adverts to the right and the shop links and other links to the left. The actual articles look the same apart from ours now have room to breath, you might say. Even on the forums, the text was more cramped and maybe we could look at that sometime, but it might mean some of you going for new upgraded glasses. It really is just a feel. The site is and has all the same ingredients just spread out a little differently. Take a look - PS That one does work Sean! As an afterthought, I am wondering if the new site is a bit like new styles of fishing and new tackle as compared to the old rubbish (Sorry Peter) that we used in the 50s and 60s. There are still those who swear by that gear despite how much better our present stuff is. It's called - nostalgia.

How about a cricket analogy? The old site was like Test Cricket, steeped in tradition, complex, fascinating, full of twists and turns, plenty of room for spin and variation. The new site is Twenty20; fast; furious, good for the big hitters but not much fun for the steady, thoughtful types? That one probably won't work for everyone!
