Simon Clarke - catfish angler extraordinaire! Simon Clarke - catfish angler extraordinaire!

In the first of a major new series of FishingMagic podcasts Ian Welch meets up with Simon Clarke to discuss catfishing past, present and future.

Simon Clarke needs little in the way of introduction to anyone who has been involved with catfishing in the UK in recent decades. As a long-standing founder and committee member of the Catfish Conservation Group (CCG) he has helped to promote catfishing to large numbers of anglers as well as being closely involved with helping to advise and educate correct angling methods for the species. The business end of a 200lb plus beast!

As an author he has helped to compile the CCG Guides to UK Catfish Waters and his solo work ‘Catfish – A Practical Guide’ is an authoritative guide to the species. He has featured in numerous DVD’s and films and as boss of Catfish Pro he has sourced, designed and assembled the most comprehensive range of tackle available to the catfish angler.

Now running the ‘Tackle Up’ tackle shop in Fleet, Hampshire Simon remains just as passionate about the species as ever and with Welchy having first cut his big fish teeth with the Claydon Lake cats back in the mid 1980’s the pair have well over 50 years of catting experience between them!

Yes I thought it was very good as well...good stuff fishing magic..more pod casts please ! Simon is clearly is a bloke who speaks from first hand experience and talked nice, sensible stuff. He did not try and confuse the listener with over complicated mumo jumbo just to make himself look good....although I am quite sure he could have if he wanted ! He was also not afraid to disagree ...for example when Ian repeated the often quoted point about baiting to attract little fish which the cats then move in to eat. Simon immediately put him right...and said they didnt move in to eat the fish it was the activity that attracted them. Very true I recon...Catfish are very inquisitive...thats why clonks work. Anyway I am not really a Catfish fan but it also gave me the inclination to have a proper go. I have a very good venue close to me. I am fired up to give it a go this weekend.

True, no one really knows for sure but we all have our own opinions. I recon Simon was closer to the mark than Ian and – in general- its the activity that draws the Cats in rather than specifically targeting a fish and moving in to eat it...although that of course could be the end result. The point for me was that Simon was not content to just sort of go along with the flow and agree for the sake of it which is what I think many people would have done. To me that spoke volumes about his actual credentials as a Catfisherman.
