The legendary 70's matchman - now bait and commercial angling guru - Roy Marlow. The legendary 70's matchman - now bait and commercial angling guru - Roy Marlow.

In this second FishingMagic podcast Ian Welch travels up to the Glebe Fishery to meet with commercial angling and bait guru, Roy Marlow.

I grew up reading about the exploits of Ivan Marks and Roy Marlow as part of the all-conquering 'Leicester Likely Lads' squad which dominated the match fishing scene during the early 1970's but it was not until much later that I met Roy for the first time when we were both actively involved with the Professional Coarse Fisheries Association.

Roy's common sense approach to commercial fishery management was always a pleasure to see at first hand and his Glebe Fishery remains at the forefront of the genre to this day but there is much more to Roy than commercials as this podcast, the first in a short series with Roy, reveals.

It was marvellous to spend a morning in his company and over several cups of tea overlooking one of the pools on the Glebe we started off talking about Roy's past before moving onto commercial fisheries and the role they play in today's angling scene.

After a break we than moved on to a more in-depth look at Roy's current involvement with Marukyu - and those conversations, which include a wealth of unique knowledge on baits and baiting, will be the focus of future podcasts.

This podcast should start automatically or, to listen to Roy and Welchy in conversation, use the audio player to the right of this page.

I'm a little confused, ok Yes, you met Roy Marlow. How does this help FM and the rest of the Members other than to say you met Roy Marlow ?? I was expecting a bit more about fishing and his tactics. I've seen roy's vidoes on how to tie Knots in the Past and they have helped me to tie better knots and knots i have more confidence in. Is Roy joining the FM Team or am i missing something completely

I did try to Matt, however the built in speaker on my PC is pants at the best of time and i struggled to hear it, so gave up after a couple of minutes. Yes the volume was as high as it will go. Was it much more different than the titbits already mentioned in the written article ? Did i miss anything really exciting ?

Mmmm... to get a decent play back I stuck my earphones into the laptop (the sound quality is usually good enough without them).

Podcast opened automatically for me via the Audio Player (I'm running Windows 7). But even with the volume at 100% the conversation was barely audible. Need to sort that out before the next instalments! The Likely Lads were the team for me back in the 70's. Came across them in various guises at all sorts of venues so I hope this glitch can be fixed as I would love to hear a bit from Roy about that era. 10/10 for effort 2/10 for execution :(

Whats a jib it Perhaps it should be jibbit, an immigrant word in Germany for a joint so perhaps he'll smoke a joint. I heard it.

All a bit negative?? perhaps podcasts are beyond the average 'silver surfer'.................... Now before I head for the blast proof bunker)........ On a serious (and less offensive note:D) its all about depth and breadth - FM is an online magazine. like any fishing mag, there are articles that engage and those you flick past. The podcast idea is very good - and roy marlow is and has been for some time, a big mover and shaker in the angling world. I was really interested to hear Roy's take on how and why fishing has changed since the 70's. The advantage FM has over traditional angling publications is that we can contribute in lots of different ways. that means writing and submitting articles as well as engaging on forum banter. By the way, it worked perfectly well on my computer Perhaps its time for Bletchley park to upgrade 'collosus'.......

Perhaps it should be jibbit, an immigrant word in Germany for a joint so perhaps he'll smoke a joint. I heard it. Sorry not familiar with drug speak! jib it= 'do the dustin' or 'do the hoffman' or do the offski=go=leave.. etc So if someone is to 'jib' the site they will leave the site. 'I'm jibbing it' means I'm going, leaving, etc. Nothing whatsoever to do with drug taking. Hope that helps.

Sorry not familiar with drug speak!Urban Dictionary : A word for "joint", used by arabian immigrants in Germany. Wenn du das hörst, bau dir 'n Jibbit, schmeck die Nachtluft fahr durch die City! - Haftbefehl ---------- Post added at 23:23 ---------- Previous post was at 23:21 ---------- By the way, it worked perfectly well on my computer Click the image to open in full size.I remember working on those in the 70s! Why don't you upgrade to a newer Amstrad?

My state of the art sound system is perfect for all my gaming needs and for Hi Def streaming. The podcast is just about audible at 100% via headphones and surround sound! Something is not quite right! :)

Rarely use my PC these days as high end laptops cover just about everything that's thrown at them - apart from that podcast without earphones:omg:

It starts automatically for this silver surfer and he can hear it very well thank you very much, no problems with audio levels at all. As an online medium podcasts have been around a long while and are the 'future' I suppose. Marks and Marolw were the team in the 70's and I took the long drive back then just ot buy some of Ivans floats from their shop.

Like Neil, I am running Windows7 and I could hear it perfectly at low volume. Perhaps someone has tweaked it? It's always worth listening to Roy, though this was more of a historical chat about old times than tips on how to fish, I think. Roy has designed a lot of tackle over the years and I thik this is sometimes forgotten behind his match and fishery achievements. My favourite float rod, saved for special occasions ( I think Mark Wintle has the same rod) was designed by Roy. First time I had a chuck I nearly hit the far bank! It's a beauty! And at least with a podcast Ian couldn't slip in his usual 'product placement' photographs :D

The sounbd is perfectly fine on mine (XP on on my laptop and Vista on home PC). It starts automatically. My only gripe is that there is no indication of how long the podcast is in minutes - is it 5 minutes or 5 hours? It would be helpful to know how muchg tim to put aside to sit and listen - will it fit into my lunch break say? Will it last longer thn my attention span?

Many thanks for your feedback; we are sorry to read that some of you are experiencing problems listening to Ian and Roy in conversation. The mp3 file and the built-in player are both working and give excellent, high definition audio reproduction so it may be that the sound cards or speakers used by some browsers are in need of attention. The podcast should start immediately when you click on the story and there is an in-build volume control to the bottom left of the mini audio player (which in turn is to the right hand side of the screen). Ensure this is set to maximum if you are experiencing difficulties. In respect of timing we are aiming to keep all podcasts below 15 minutes duration; this one is approximately 9 minutes 30 seconds but we will endeavour to post the length of the broadcast on all future recordings.

Thank you for your reply in respect of the sound quality problem. Although I have not played it through my PC, I generally use it's speaker system for high quality digital sound, not podcasts, my laptop generally covers all my needs. The integrated speaker system of my laptop will normally give a very good account of everything that's thrown at it at 32-50% volume. In this instance the podcast started immediately, as it should, but the sound needed to be set at 100% to hear comfortably. Having built my own PC systems since the 386's of the late 1980's I have a reasonable grasp of how things should work and I believe the sound quality was somewhat lacking to the many other podcasts I have listened to in the past. Jerry PS Played through decent earphones the quality was acceptable, much the same as playing it through an external speaker system linked to a PC.

Sound quality is fine just as some people said the volume was a little low so had to use earphones. I must say I like the idea of it - there is a series that Dave Harrell did , just him and some guy chatting very relaxing, just like this one - very good idea
