Review - Cliff Hatton Envelopes
Geoff Maynard reviews a unique and distinctive range of stationery from the one and only Cliff Hatton.
Regular Fishing Magic and Waterlog Magazine contributor, the incorrigible cartoonist, Cliff Hatton, has produced a range of unique wallet envelopes depicting colour works from his books ‘All Wind & Water’ and ‘All Fluff & Waders’.
Cliff explained to me how the idea came about:
“I’d filled out a job application form and was tucking it into a plain white envelope when I thought how’s my application going to stand out from the rest?, so I printed the envelope with a drawing I’d done for another book. It looked great, I think, and there was no way it’d get lost in the pile. I got an interview and, sure enough, the envelope was remarked upon.
I then began to print envelopes purely because they looked good and made people smile, and the post-marked stamp gives them that little bit of provenance, a sign that the Royal Mail deems them ok: that they work, if you get my cock-eyed way of looking at things!”
Well I can tell Cliff that if he enjoys sending them it’s even nicer getting them, especially when they’re mixed in with a wad of soul-less utility bills and brown manila. They’re not cheap to produce - what with the price of printer ink - but if these little works of practical, useful art are reserved for your best mates and special occasions I reckon they’re a good buy.
A pack of 30 (5 x 6 designs) costs £15.00 or, for a one-off tenner, you can commission your own cartoon and use it for ever more! Discounts for larger quantities from clubs, businesses - and those with lots of friends! All envelopes from A5 down can be printed.
