Woof Woof ....

Went out to Press Manor yesterday and got two rainbows and 5 browns. The fishing was hard, horrible cold "Scotch Mist" type weather.

Very little caught, some anglers blanked.

Got my fish on SA damsels and cats whisker fished roly poly style. No sign of buzzers yet but there were a few pond olives hatching.

When the water warms up the fishing should be sensational. Have booked the boat for Easter Sunday. Anyone who wants to share it with me is welcome.

Anyone know which pub is nearest, cheapest and/or most traditional to the fishery ?
Show/hide user stats
Three Horseshoes about 2 miles away mate.

Are you buying the beers?
Show/hide user stats
Is that the one we'll be having a pint in at lunchtime as well ?

Of course I'll buy you a beer Ron, half of mild is it?
Show/hide user stats
Yeah well - that's about my limit when I'm driving.

Just got the Friday night of work so can make the fishin. Also just got pc back on line. So much for windows service pack 2.
Good time last year.
I'm sure SP2 has slowed my pc down ......It was fine before I installed it......

Hi Ed
It corrupted my network card, don't know why though! One day it all worked fine, the next CRASH. Pc still still not 100% Still problems establishing the network.
Fishing far better than pcing.

How many coming to this fish in Ron?........my new rod and reel arrived today and i will try to make it, might need the loan of a fly or two and plenty of room though.........but if i make it please keep me away from the pub that Barney is in, i only have a limited allowance, and Barney can talk the pants off a vicar ( and if he can't he removes em anyway!!!!!!)

You have a very good point Brummie. In the next few days I have to book a table at the Three Horseshoes for lunch.

Lets see how many are coming.

And I will buy you a beer mate.

Cool - look forward to seeing you Brummie.

I've just got a load of lures from selectafly. Bollx to the traditionalist. By CWs will out fish the buzzer brigade at this time of year....

Are you bringing along your special 'rubbers' ?
Show/hide user stats
I'll bring the rubbers......but i didn't know i would need my buzzers......do you recommend drop offs or delks? i'll soon have this trouting sussed!!
Show/hide user stats
Brummie, I might have a drink off you for a change as well.

Barney,

I spent 2 hours pulling cats whiskers around the other day and never had a pull. My Black Woolly Bugger did the business however.

Here's the dressing:

Hook: Long Shank 10 or 12 Kamasan
Silk: Black
Tail: Bunch of black marabou
Butt: A few turns of lime green antron
Body: Back Chennille
Hackle: A black henny-cock hackle wound palmerwise. Another hackle wound in at the head.
Rib: Silver oval tinsel.

Deadly!!

I seem to remember it was Dick Shrive who once said that there is only two colours for trout - black and white and white is no bloody good!

Have to agree to some extent with the colours thing.

Fished on Sunday evening and started with CW and couldn't get a touch for an hour, despite using different retrieves and changing swims.

Switched to a Black Peacock spider and had 2 fish in 2 casts, but both of them shed the hook at the net !!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't tried a woolly bugger, but I think it might be the next creation at the vice tonight.

See you at the fish in.
dont know about a Woolly Bugger ---Try a Baldy Old Bastard ...They are really easy to tie .....(just a bare hook)

The Woolly Bugger is an American creation devised for catching Steelheads.

But as steelheads are basically a sea going type of rainbow trout, it works wherever they are. I have modified it by putting a couple of turns of fluorescent lime green just in front of the tail in the "Viva" style. I often used to call it the the "Woolly Vugger" because of this.

Best way of fishing it is with a medium or slow sinking clear line. I use a shooting head over deep water. This is a fly you must count down to the right depth.

First cast, count 5 and retrieve, second cast count 10 and retrieve, third cast count 15 and retrieve, until you get a take. Best retrieve is the roly poly style.

Remember what you have counted down to and you can catch lots. I have taken rainbows to 15lbs and wild browns to 7 lbs on this fly.

Just ordered a selection of flies for trip from selectafly. looking forward to giving the flies a good drowning.

So, who's going then?
