 i dont realy see the need for a reel to spin for any longer than you can wallace cast and if thats four minuites then its a god dam long cast indeed. I concentrate on one thing and thats how smoothly it runs off on the trot and if it pays out line as it should why worry about how long it spins for. The whole object of a pin is line payout if it dont spin freely then its a no no and thats about it. as already stated i own 3 pins being the ariel - trudex - and rapidex 3 new pins being purist 2 okuma sheffield and 1 i am getting for xmas ( got it but she wont let me play wiv it) john wilson heritage.They all spin differently in one way or another you just gotta get used to them but thats the fun of pins aint it lads and lasses.

 I didn't say it NEEDS to spin for 4 mins. ,thats just an indication of how free running they CAN be as Brian seemed a bit disapointed with his,up to him whether to de-gunge it or not.

.jpg) I do my BJ a disservice.I've had it out & spun it and it will actually spin for about a minute....which will do me. But yes I suppose I am a bit disappointed.It is a lovely reel its just that having borrowed and used my mates BJ and as a consequence getting one of my own I knew it wasn't running as well as it could.Rather than mess about I did the sensible thing and packed it off to Gary Mills for a service and it came back much better but still not as sweet as my mates....in fact I don't think it performs noticeably better than my original Purist. I must assume it was de-gunged during the service.Maybe mine just isn't a great example or Big Phil's is exceptional.I dont know. The sweetest runner I have is my Greys.Not to everyone's taste and it doesn't have the looks,presence or reputation of the BJ and others but IMO it is a lovely, simple, understated little reel.I love it and that's what really counts.  "Maybe mine just isn't a great example....." Just not run in yet mate is my guess, persist with it and it will improve. Ironically enough, after making a song and dance about the need for lubrication, I would add that when running in you might want to dispense with lube, as it slows the process..... (with cars after a rebuild you should use old fashioned mineral oil - if you put in a modern synthetic it can actually stop the car running in properly or at all !!!!) then when the high spots have worn away add a drop of oil.

 Put some paper vanes in the spool and set the reel up in front of a hairdryier (set to cold). Let it run for a few hours, this will run it in no problem!

 PS. And I know very well about phosphor bronze and its lubricating qualities, they make the best engine valve guides out of it - still need oil tho ! They do say that after all of human civilization has come to an end it is the bronze statues that will outlast us all....

 So what is the concensus, do you oil a pin? The reason I ask is that at the last time I used my pin (JW Young Purist II) it ran like a dog and I had to give up. How do you clean them up?

 Clean out the old stuff with a few drops of lighter fluid, dry off and lubricate with one or two drops of sewing machine oil. Easy.....it's worked well for me for the last40 years!!!!!!!!!!! Ye gods ..,.arguing over a drop of reel oil some of you need to get out more

 yes I think so .......you need to no if its a true pin or not a true pin does not need oil and a bearing'ed reel does

 ok,bully mate your reel has bearings shielded ones i beleave so they then selfs don't need oilng but if you do as alan says a little tlc goes a long way ,give it a clean and a smidgin of oil even if its just a whipe down of the central shaft with a oil soaked piece of kitchen towel /lint free cloth.tthen refit spool if it still isn't spinning enough ,work the bearings by spinning it back & forth whilst watching tv .to free up the grease in the bearings (run in) ,don't know how often you've used it ! from new but sometimes the grease in the bearings slightly congeals /thickens due to sitting on a shop shelf for a while but soon re constitutes after some use ,if still not to your satisfaction sell it and buy a proper reel like a okuma aventa pro or sheffield

 Thanks Chav. I use it very rarely now, so do you think this may be part of the problem? I did use it very regularly and never had a problem. Then used it 2 times in 2 years and it was useless!

 could be,especally if stored in a cold place ! and it can't hurt to try ( unless you don't watch what your doing whilst twirling the reel and snag a knuckle or loose some skin ha Ha ) like i said in my earlier post ,giving it a clean / lub every now & then ,if nothing else give's you a excuse to tinker with your reels,Everyone should be able to do a simple service on a centrepin no matter what type it is its not rocket science and they're hardly complicated peices of equipment now are they.

 Nooooooo Cakester, the true pin Does need a smidgen of oil, the sealed bearing type needs no more than it already has sealed inside..... I think I need to get out more. Why does a drop of oil matter so much.... ? Better ask George Bush

I'm not going to oil my Adcock because despite all the advice I still cant get the bloody spool off...which is where I came in 56 posts ago. So instead I shall nip upstairs and blow dry my Bob James...as it were ! Brian
