Hello, could anyone offer me some guidance? i am currently in the market for a new avon/quiver rod. i intend to use it for barbel i will be fishing fishers green next season. however i would also like to use it for other species throughout the year such as, chub, perch, tench etc on my local club waters. most of the rods that i have been looking at have been either 1 1/4lb or 1 1/2lb test curve but i have noticed that most barbel rods are at least 1 3/4 lbs will these lighter rods still be powerfull enough for the barbel yet subtle enough for the other species. many thanks

I have a greys prodigy specialist rod, comes with a 1.25 AND a 1.75 top section, so I get the best of both worlds in one rod, you could go for one of the greys barbel rods as they come with a quivertip top as well.

Yes they will Jim,have a look at the Fox duo's

Hi Jim,This is only my own opinion, at 1 3/4 lbs, you will get a barbel rod that will be able to handle quite rough conditions i.e. a fair bit of water pushing through, and also give you some power if you have to hook and hold, but with a rod of this test curve you shall lose much enjoyment as regards fishing for the chub.

If you can afford it I would go for a both a 1 1/4 test curve and a barbel rod at 1 3/4.If you get into anything like flood conditions with any of the lighter rods with a big lead on, you will wish you had the heavier option...I did anyway.

As regards the lighter rod, I have a TFG river and stream rod, beautiful chub rod, but I haven’t had a barbel on it yet...might be fun…might outgun it a little.

Then, like a lot of the lads on here, a John Wilson Avon Quiver system rod, this really does bridge the gap, brilliant for chub, also I have had barbel and carp on it, why pay more...its a Yorkshire mans dream. Prodigy 1 3/4 for the barbel, also used it for floater fishing for carp.

Phew!  tara Jim.

mithrander, does the your twin tip come with a quiver? if not how sensitive are the tips?

Mine is the specialist. no quiver tips just the two different test curve tops.

I find the 1.75 top is excellent for a fast flowing river, it is sensitive and very responsive.

I am going to use the 1.25 tc top tomorrow on a still water for small carp, I use it as a quivertip because it is sensitve enough. I will also be using a shimano hyperloop quivertip rod with a 4 oz carbon tip, this is only slightly more sensitive in my opinion.

I will give you a full run down on the day when I settle down after the soaking I am expecting.

If you want the alround rod, then a quivertip with a 1.25 and a 1.75 top would give you more than enough for your needs, these can be picked up for around the £100 mark(maybe a bit more for the 3 tops, my specialist was £90 from a local tackle shop ) . I got the twin top as I already have a couple of Quivertip rods that I like and did not see the point in getting anymore.

Hope that helps, if you want I can hunt out some links to the rods I have mentioned, might give you an idea of the prices etc if you have no luck finding them yourself.

Have a good look at the fox range , Mine has a 1 1/4 lb and a 1 3/4 lb avon tops with a 1 1/2 lb quivertip top with 3 tips which i have added to, a very soft 1/2 oz and  3/4 oz tips that i use for breaming. i have also made a 6 inch donkey top to take a swing tip. Thats 8 rods all in one (less to carry ).

I can't seem to find the other three tip rod online, but I know some of the guys at the Barbel fish in were talking about having them.

Tinca, I looked at the Fox rods after I had bought my greys, and although I am a tackle tart and wanted them my bank balance said no to having both, They looked nice rods.

Maybe that is the way to go Jim.

more to the point is two separate rods cheaper than one good versatile rod ?

I have just checked the fox site and they don't do the 3 rod combo any more as they are a brilliant bit of kit. Would second hand do?. But your not having my two.

Fox Kevlex Xtreme Barbel 12ft Rod for £134-99 seems a good price to me. That means you could have 2 different rods @ £68 each. OR one rod with THREE tops which is much more versatile. Then save like hell for the second one.

£140 for a rod that covers all the bases does seem good,

Just have to find that extra bit of cash, and that is not so easy in January after the excesses of Christmas.

Hi Jim,

I Use Shimano Hyperloops for all of my chub and barbel fishing. I would suggest the barbel xt. It comes with 3 tops one avon style top at 1 3/4 test and 2 quiver tip sections one heavy and one light. I have used them on the ribble and caught chub in excess of six pounds and barbel to just over 14 pounds. I also use them on the little river Dane for all my barbel and chubbing. I can honestly say i never needed a more sensitive rod and have not had problems with hook pulls as the top sections are very forgiving even on light lines, just set the clutch of the reel accordingly. Also a great tench and bream rod.

You can pick one of theese up for about £70 i dare say less if u shop about.

Mine are getting a bit battered and I have bought 2 new J W young rods as they are a work of art !! lovely bit of kit. Will keep uyou posted on how they fish.

 Chris
