2 Summers ago prawn was catching plenty of carp and tench on on of the local lakes - then it cockles and muscles added to prawn there was even one old boy who fished with nothing else. When you walked round the lake almost every bait tub had some sea food in it. Now nobody is using seafood - what happened - fish wise up to it or anglers find a new super bait and the fad moved on? I've just bought some prawns to see if they still work and if they do - I'll be keeping it to myself

Why not go the whole hog and treat them to a bit of smoked salmon. This can be backed up by a good blob of Beluga Caviar in a pva mesh. Don't forget to squeeze a bit of lemon juice on the salmon and squeeze a bit of brown bread onto the hook shank.

great tips....I'll make sure I've got some Spaghetti Vongole with me next time ...bet that'll select the biggest minnows.

I'm off tonight to try the prawns out - fished over a bed of lettuce with a nice 1000 island dressing

Pre-bait some down here Lord Paul , we serfs have never seen , let alone tasted such delights .

the trouble with seafood as bait is you go home smelling like a gynaecologist's pencil .

John West tinned smoked oysters. Chub love them!
|
 |
 This season, my bait will mostly be wearing........ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . White Slingbacks

John West tinned smoked oysters. Chub love them! Yes, but how do you hook 'em and keep them on the hook ? or hair ? or whatever....
|
 |
Tinned smoked oysters, mmmmmm, sod the fish on that one. Windy, you cut a piece out of a pair of tights, twist the excess around and blob with a flame to seal it off.If hair rigging push a baiting needle so the point exits by the melted 'blob' and loop the hairloop over said 'blob' and pull straight. This'll work for paste too.

 |
of to try the prawn again soon - maybe hair rig a bit of crab stick

Any chance of a more detailed explanation? For some reason I can't visualise what you mean.

Wrap the oyster up in a square of fine mesh material, twist the excess material leaving the bait in a 'bulge' and (I missed this bit), TIE OFF this excess with pva or fine nylon. carefully blob the excess nylon with a lighter to shrink and condense the nylon until you are left with a little 'button' of melted goo. you should, given the patience to unravel my rambling, have a ball of bait with a micro-mushroom at one end; this is the bit you put your hair loop over.

OK, ta, much clearer. In one of the current sea mags there's a tip about using bait elastic to tie soft baits like this on to the hook (actually fresh mussels in this case), think that might work on a smaler scale, tying it on to a bait spike or similar?

Maybe my rare and deepwater chum, but smoked oysters are very frail and I think that meshing them up would be the only successful way of keeping them attached. I did see an article about mussels recommending pouring boiling water over them so they were 'par-boiled', still held onto an amount of goodness and bait elasticing 'em to an o'shaughnessy. I'd still eat the oysters myself mind, they're ace.
