Ah the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, we used to do a cover version of delila

In addition to the  Accrington Stanley Brass Band and Barnsley and District Miners Welfare and Whippet Breeders Brass Band, I also listen to the North Wombwell Ferret and Pigeon Fanciers Jews Harp band.

In between those I also like The Wurzels!

The live version of Delila is the best i have ever heard of that track, Tom's way is good but nothing on Alex Harvey.

Got some old vinyl's out and sat back to some Cat Stevens, and Yes.

Heard on the radio Bross are making a come back. Nothing to get excited about there then.

Frank Zappa -

Zoot Money -

Count Basie.

Why is it that none of you like the sort of music I do?

And why is it that I cannot abide the popular music of today?

Why don't you like The Wurzels, or the plaintive strains of a north of England brass band playing against the backdrop of a depressing mist laden northern working town in the depths of winter.

And what about an afternoon of Beethoven?

Am I so different from the rest of you?

in sooooooooooooo many ways Ron.

Ron,

Theres nothing wrong with what you like, that was your music in your time of growing up.

It's a bit like the films, they have sound now.

TV has colour, times move on Ron. Nothing wrong with Beethoven but he would'nt be in my list of bands.

Ron i can quite easily sit and listen to and watch a good old military marching band or a sots pipe band.....something about the pomp and pagentry of it all that gets me going i think.

Question to anyone out there....do they still have the marching band at the FA cup final??? Wasn`t it the coldstream guards???

With the downsizing of the forces its now A Coldstream Guard!
For most of Beethoven's music you need a symphony orchestra to play it not a bloody silly band!

Ron,

I have already referred to the Penistone Rose...Ms. Kate Rusby who frequently uses noble Yorkshire brass bands as backing musicians.

Kate Rusby 1

Kate Rusby 2

Kate Rusby - The Yorkshire Couple

Hope I've converted you Ron!

Ron,

he wrote a lot of quartets that Beethoven - the Four last string quartet are some of the greatest works ever composed. Don't need a symphony orchestra for that....I think that's why they call in chamber music - all the players can get into one cubicle.

Yes I am aware that Beethoven wrote some wonderful music for string quartets. But I do prefer his major works.

Kate Rusby from Barnsley certainly beats everything the Scousers can offer, including MacCrapney.

I have a few CDs of Kate. I must say I rather like her.

Ron,

Try Count Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf....none of his works were major ...but he composed a Bassoon concerto...you don't get many of those!!!

(And that is his real name - he's not one of m'luds inbred Germanic cousins ---oh perhaps he maybe)

What do you think of Ms Rusby?

Beat me to it Ron

I'm not ashamed to say that some of her songs regularly move me to tears - especially "My Young Man"

Bunion

this evening it has been

  • Kate Rusby - again (blame Ron)
  • The Impressions (without Curtis Mayfield)
  • Ian Dury and the Blockheads

Don't forget this little band of the 60s.

They were my late wife's favourite.
