BBC interview with the first band to play at the first ever Glasto. And still the only band to open and close the festival!

Use this link to access Road to Venezuela and then other performances from Glasto this year.

Stackridge

See why I am overjoyed that my favourite band as a youth are back and touring - apart from the fact that we have all  aged disgracefully - what are men of that vintage doing with those attractive young violinists?  Fiddling..perhaps

Just so Ron doesn't feel left out, and you guys may have a laugh at our expense.

Jussi Bjorling.       Enrico Caruso (and still the best)

                    Renata Tebaldi.        Franco Correlli.

                    And flipside-

Yngwie Malmsteen.      Chet Atkins.       Cirk Hammett.

Les Paul.  and not forgetting good old  Joe Walsh.

Mum used to have a disc of Jussi Bjorling singing La Donna e Mobile - what a voice. Ian Bostridge - great voice for Schubert Lieder

I would add to that Derek, the modern day soprano Anna Netrebko. She may not have the voice perfection of Tebaldi, but what an absolute stunner on stage.

The reason Derek likes the great Jussi is that in his spare time, Bjorling loved lure fishing for pike.

It's intereresting that many famous anglers of the past loved classical music and opera.

To name a few:

Dick Walker, Peter Stone, Harry Plunket-Greene (he was a professional singer of note)

There are many more.

PAUL,,

did you know 'bjorling' was a angler??. other than singing and a weakness for 'spirits'!!. lure fishing for pike in the baltic region was his joy...

No idea at all.

What a pity he died so long ago...he would have been snapped up by a tackle company to front their new (old rebranded) range of tackle

Jussi's new Aria range of lure fishing tackle!!!

And if you do not love the following, you are either queer or dead!

Very nice.....

shame that idle rumour has suggested past liaisons with Robbie Williams and Justin Timberlake (they are popular male vocalists amongst some of today's young folk!!) - I am sure they're just press specualtions...or she has dubious taste.

I gather she, and her Romanian fiance, are expecting their first....ahh

Well I suppose we are allowed our liasons in youth.

I am sure that Anna will have learned not to have anything to do with these pop music plonkers.

There is no form of humanity lower than the likes of Williams or MacCrapney.

If I'm not mistaken, the old radio programme Family Favourites had more requests for the duet ''Au-Fond-Du Temple Saint'' from the Pearl Fishers than any other in a twenty year span.Bjorling and Robert Merrill the American baritone, recorded it in 1950.  Outstanding-often played it on route fishing.

Oh by the way,Walkers particular favourite tenor was Giuseppe Di Stefano.

By the way Paul, have you noticed the incredible physical similarity beween Kate Rusby and Anna Netrebko?

Ron used to sing in the church choir .......

The vicar had a 'soft spot' for him

It's almost impossible to pickjust three bands/ artists. However here are three that I always find myself returning to time and again.

In no particular order:

Probably the greatest voice in blues rock, Paul Rodgers with arguably the greatest guitarist Paul Kossoff.

Free - I'm a mover

My favourite blues guitarist of all time. Man this cat can pick.

Big Bill Broonzy

Lastly a man who needs no introduction

The inimitable Rory Gallagher
