Have a look at Dell products. I've had two of theirs. They have a very good team, they will sell you no more than you need.
www.novatech.com great company have used them for years and have never had a problem. forget dell, they make components to their own spec, if something goes wrong out of warranty or you want to upgrade at any point you will struggle.

I'm on a dell laptop now. Got to be the heaviest lap top going!!! Novatech or ebuyer do some good stuff. Lots of RAM and cache is always good. Especially for lots of internet stuff.

Depends what you want Wol, desktop or Lappy... and what you use it for. Personally I would go for at least an Intel duo core processor, with 2gb RAM and a good graphics card. Some good varied stuff here: Mesh Computers

Some good advice, thanks. Everybody doing ok now with Vista????????
Go for the Intel Quad processor, as big as you can afford and 4GB of memory, but remember that a 32 bit system will only use just over 3GB of it. Been on Vista Home Premium now since it came out, no problems whatsover.

That is more or less what I am on now Graham althought I have not changed to Vista. Still on Windows, but I am firewalled to the hilt.

Thanks Graham. This looks pretty good for £649.00 Any thoughts?????? Mesh PC

Looks good that does Wol. If you intend doing any gaming on it though ask them to put a 512mb graphics card in it instead of the 256.

Remember, on the same spec PC, Vista runs far slower than XP, and XP far slower than 2000 Professional. Having said that I'd get XP whilst it's still available, 2000 Pro isn't so easy to navigate if your not techie minded. As has been said already, best CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM absolute minimum. I've not long ago finished building two PCs, one for me mum, one for me. Hers: 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, WinXP Home. Very quick. Mine: 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM (although WinXP can only use 3.5GB of that), WinXP Home, Doesn't seem as quick as my mums (!), but then I've never had them in the same place, and I do lots of picture and video editing on mine. Mums cost under £380 to build including new LCD monitor etc., mine £370 but using my existing LCD, keyboard & mouse, & case. P.S. PCMark 2002 Benchmarks (CPU/RAM/HDD) Mum: 7107/10928/1777 Mine: 10277/20866/1806 You can find PCMark2002 here to compare your current system. P.P.S. I use PCMark2002 even though there are newer versions of PCmark, because I have scores from old PCs that I no longer have that I use as a comparison.

Strap a pair of wings on it and it'd fly!

Wol, pay the extra £10 and get the nVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT card a mate runs 2 512's in sli mode, and ive got the 1gb version, amazing card and for the sake of £10 you wont be disapointed.
Yup, I'm running an 8600GT too, good budget card for gaming.
looking around PC World yesterday, I think my next one will be a laptop. Hate being stuck to a desk.

I've bought the girlfriend a laptop a while ago, the negative side is you get so much less (performance wise) for your money. I bought her a Lenovo (used to be IBM) laptop, 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM (upgraded from 1GB), fingerprint scanner (woohoo), from Dabs for under £500. Probably even cheaper now. Plus if you're not already wireless (we were networked, but not yet wireless) there's the added expense of wireless router and print server (or new wireless printer). P.S. Yup, a little cheaper: £389.98 from Dabs

 512MB ATI Radeon 3650 (Direct X10.1, PCI Express 2.0)[upg £ 30.00] 256MB nVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT - DVI, HDTV, TV-Out[upg £ 40.00] I've ordered the 512 but you reckon the 256 is better????
the 8600 uses the newer ram gddr3, maening faster speeds etc. if the card needs more then 256 it will use your pc ram to make up the differance
