when fishing sardines(head on or off),how often do you change them?

herring.if using herring do you fish them whole or halved?

i've got some fox poppers and theyre pretty good so nerrr, an i'm not a tackle tart as frothey will testify when i go on that carping fish in, i've also got balsa sticks and bits of old wine cork,
on thing for trebble protectors on lures,
if you get and old wine cork and cut slices off you can put it onto your lure trebbles and it helps stop em all tangling in the box

You only change a sardine if you are twitching if you feel the bait has come off(unless you are using baiting elastic, tie on the second eye treble and wrap it round the tail a few times)It will become tatty if you are twitcting or when to reteived the bait. Just put a new sardine on and start all over again twitching the line. Until you get a take. Then a new one on

Depends on how big the herring, if they are huge (10"+) cut them in a half diagonally, the oil juices permate the water more quickly than the whole bait. The heads are just effective as the tails ends.

Just found an article on Pop-up it can be found under Rigs Library under the title of "The Poppernoster Pike Rig" by Chris Bishop

I heard that before, oh yes where was it?(LOL)

it depends on how big the herring is, if it's sardine sized use it whole if it's big mackerel sized half it.

Whole sardines, brilliant bait.

For popping them up I use a device that I got hold of years ago, can't even remember who makes them, but they are basically a copper tube with a tight fitting plunger. Put the plunger in the tube, force it down the throat a likely looking deadbait, withdraw plunger insert round foam stick down tube, replace plunger and slowly withdraw tube whilst depressing plunger, leaving the foam inside. Works a dream.

The number of times I've used it over the years, the only surprise is how I haven't lost it yet!

The problem with tht is if you lose the fish and the bait or if the fish swallows the bait. Much better to use a pop up ball attached to the trace or a balsa insert attched to the trace. That way you get the pop up material back with the trace

Sardines = Great bait, I like to use em whole whether popped up or down.

Herring = Gave me my first 20, say no more, I like em on the deck 'heads orfff'!!!  Although controversial - I've also had a couple of decent Zeds on Herring and would actually use it for them on a couple of waters

On running water I like to use a rig I first saw illustrated in an article by the great Barrie McConnell which I believe is an adjustment of the old John Sidley Eel rig.  Basically you run a paternoster link, with a decent sunken float on it and ensure it is longer than your trace.  Used to get some great Pike and Zed action on it

Kind regards,

Dave
