.jpg) From what I've read in the sea websites, the best casting reels without a doubt are the Penn 525 Supermag and the Abu 6500 Mag Elite. Lots of useful info at www.neilmackellow.sea-angler.org and www.beach-caster.com. I know the Suveran RX has a great write up so the XP should be good as well and I'd definately go for the Supermag if it was me.

Ive not used either, but from what Ive have been able to gather(trying to decide my self what reel) the ABU tends to need more care/cleaning then the penn.
a 13ft rod will be ideal for a multi. just make sure its one you can bend.
if its your first time casting a multi, stick the mags on full(depending on the reel) and slow the cast down, hard fast jerks are what causes the most birds nests.
you could also try sticking the reel at the bottom of the rod and controlling it with your left hand, a little awkward at first, but when you get the hang of it you can slow your cast right down to a nice lazy flick, and still get some good distance with it.

Excellent reel have used them for years. When first using put the brake blocks in as well these come in a small bag. Put the Mag control on full. The reel spool adjustment (silver knurled knob under clutch adjuster) should be set when the reel arrives.
If you have a head wind put all mags on if its coming of your back you can slacken them of. Suggest you get down to a local field and have some practice cast first.
sorry know nothing about the rod.

Sea Angler mag used to have contact details for casting coaches. Sure there must be someone near you.
I found the mag reels excellent but eventually sold them because I hardly used them and they didn't double as pike reels.
From memory I only had one block in them and used the mag control pretty much as Brian descrimed, sometimes tightening it in mid cast, which someone else on the beach showed me.

Hi Chris why would you want to tighten it mid cast.
I have always been taught to get the longest cast possible. It is best to start of tight for the initial jolt on the spool to stop it over running. Then as the lead reache its apex release the magnets more reducinging the drag on the spool.

buy a sl20sh, from the type of fishing your doing you will not get a better reel, i have had mine 14 years now and they have never let me down
