Can some one help me just bought a John Wilson shooter six reel & rod for perch lure fishing having problems to get it to cast any distance.what is the best size line or braid for these reels and how do you set it up

This question as been asked a lot before. The problem is the JW reel does not sem to have all the adjustments found on a normal multiplier. Best to take it to a good tackle shop and see if they can help.

To set the reel for casting you attach your lure to the braid for perch i would use 20Ib braid and dont forget the wire trace unless you are certain there are no pike.
Hold the rod out and release the spool the lure should just start to move to the floor.
If it does not move the spool needs less pressure. If it falls fast then more pressure is required. On a normal multiplier there are 2 adjusters on each end of the reel which are used to line up the spool in the centre but as i said the JW reel does not seem to have any.

Is there anything in the owners manual on setting the reel up.

Sorry i can't be of more help.

Your main problem Martin is that you are trying to use a pike outfit for perch!!you don't mention overruns so i suppose you could reduce the braking system,i don't know if sixshooters use magnets or brake blocks,if magnets there should be a dial or if blocks you will need to remove end plate and take out or reduce size of blocks.Another thing you can do is add some weight to your rig or up the size of your lures,it's surprising how big a lure perch will have a go at...make sure your line is in sync.as you dont want your line going across the spool one way while the levelwind is going the other, this cuts down casting distance as well as putting a lot of strain on the mechanism.the cast with these outfits is more of an upward lob..and are better for accuracy rather than casting any great distance.good luck and have fun.

Mate of mine has got one of these and I have to say i think it is rather a cheap and nasty bit of kit.

He borrowed my chimano calcutta 251 for a bit, and was astonished at its smoothness compared to the JW.

For perch fishing I would be tempted to stick to a fixed spool, as it is a waste of time trying to cast lures like the Ondex with a multiplier.

The six shooter is more for medium sized crankbaits, soft plastics and bigger spoons.

A bit late but I had the same problem. Tracked down an instruction manual from those very helpful people at Masterline

Martin,do yourself a favour mate and buy yourself a better reel. I got rid of mine after a couple of months use. Abu,Daiwa,Shimano all do better baitcasting reels.
However, the six shooter rod is perfectly ok.

Alison, As far as I`m aware JW no longer does guided tours. Apparently he stopped doing them years ago.
