All the angling papers now talk about "pastie" carp....but who knows what the term really means?
A lot of people in the angling press who should know better are getting it wrong...here's a clue : there is NO such thing as a "pastie common"....

Let's hear your ideas. If you weren't carping 20 years ago then you might be excused for not knowing this...

A pasty is a large pastry ring, this ring is filled with various things such as minced beef and diced spuds, cheese and onion....and in this case...a carp!
I eat a lot of pies and pasties...the lads will back me up on this one, so I DO know what I am talking about here!
a half pound mirror carp with a single line of scales on the top of the back each side looking like the crimping on a pasty.

going back to the dark secretive untracult days of the 70s Paul, a pastie (also known as a shitter) was a derogatory term for small carp, usually under the 5lb mark, I think it was orginally coined by the southern lads (possibly Kent), in those das however us Northern lads were greatful for any sized carp comming to the net, Fortunaly the term appeared to vanish after the begining of the eighties

I thought a pastie carp was one taken from very muddy water where the sun doesn't shine and they are "pastie" or pale in colour like a pastie face.

Heck Monk I haven't heard the term "Shitter" in years. I last heard it from two rather well known big roach men from Coventry. It was a name for a little roach.

I always believed it is a term used to describe a small carp, common or mirror, because it resembles a Cornish pastie.

Well we live and learn I suppose.

Well some of you are nearly right - and Mark is spot-on.
I didn't hear the term before the mid-80s in the Clone Valley, so maybe the term bypassed us and went straight oop north (hello again Monk!)
If memory serves, the actual type of carp that was christened a "pastie" due to its appearance was the Dinkelsbuehler (or "Dink"), a fast-growing hump-backed strain from the Continent, bred for the table. This, as Mark says, was a small stock fish, a near-leather with just a row of scales along the back looking just like the crimping on a Cornish pastie!
So why do the "yoongsters of today" insist about writing about "pastie commons"???
Makes me seethe.
As for the dreaded "shitter", or s.s.s. (score sheet shitter), I never called a carp anything derogatory like that, being only too pleased to catch one of any size. My pals and I called a single-figure carp a "sub-dub" which was much more pleasant.
I expect they have cruel names for anything under 20lb in these days of "instant 40" day ticket waters...
On one water I fish, we call any bream under 10lb a "Steve", as my friend Steve has a knack of catching the smaller ones...
Anyone heard of any similar expressions for other species that don't make the required weight...?

Yes they do Paul - "Schoolies"!

Horrible name that is.

Razor blades (or milk bottle tops) for tiny
bream.

skerrits (spelling!)- used for small carp - a favourite word of 'Ring Pull's' (A1 pits former bailiff)for single figure fish!

or another favourite of his for bream - snow shoes!

"Pastie" is the Eastern european immigrant name for a single serving sized fish.

"kulebyaka" being the name reserved for larger fish.

“I always believed it is a term used to describe a small carp, common or mirror, because it resembles a Cornish pastie”. G.M

I shall seek legal advice on this!

Granville Marsdin has copied and re-posted the very in-depth information that I posted earlier on Cornish pasties!

If this doesn’t stop now, it will develope into the same situation as the barbel thread, where if two bobs coughs..Tony sneezes!
