Curt... I have 3 of these little beauties,how are you using the "baitclicker," I think you mean the ratchet mechanism that operates on a sliding button on the left hand side of the reel.
There are 2 x ways to use it, firstly, if you are fishing a fairly slack line to your rod top, leave the reel in free spool and push the ratchet on, that way if a fish takes you will hear the line being pulled from the spool,by the clicking, then you can re-engage the reel by winding the handle, secondly, you can leave the reel in gear, slacken of the star drag (clutch) to the tension you want the line to be under, push the ratchet on, and again, if the line is pulled of the reel by a fish, the spool will "click". This time your reel will allready be in gear, so you will have to tighten up the star drag to get line in.
Personally, I never use them, and think they are a nuisance.
