Does any member know how this compares with the Okuma Sheffield?

Hi Fruitbat

I dont know... but I know a man who does.. I will email this link to him.. I know he

has both reels.. lets me borrow the Aventa when we go the the river, but has such

high regard for the Sheffield he wont even let me look at it..........

Thanks Kevin, I must get down to my tackle shop and give them a spin.

The proof will be in the fishing though.

There's a Raven SSt-3 on ebay,well worth a punt,will outlast an Okuma.

Theres nothing to go wrong with an okuma sheffield ,so cant see how another make will outlast another pin

The okuma Aventa pro & okuma Sheffield both use the same ABEC 5 rated bearings but the Sheffield has German high grade bearings & the Aventa pro has japanese ones.

The German bearings are superior and give a slightly smoother performance (which isn't always a better thing !) But the difference is negligible & the only real difference is the front fascia & colour oh and the price. Both are equally as efficient at trotting & casting

Casting is where the extra smooth running of the Sheffield can be a hindrance & can give rise to over runs in inexperianced hands.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will drift on down to my local tackle shop and give them a both a spin.

I was interested in the comment from chavender re the Sheffield being too freerunning. I always have a tiny bit of drag applied to my multiplier for much the same reason.

Well I bought the Aventa Pro and am now addicted. Very smooth, cost effective reel, I'm really pleased with it.

I now seen on the internet you can buy cermic bearing kits for them.

Don't waste your money on ceramic bearings, they are designed to run at way higher rev's than any fishing reel, your reel will get better the more you use it.

Tks. Maybe I'll hang fire on that then.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the best price

on the Aventa Pro.

wot bout the "bob james lightweight" limited edition pin?  hu else has 1?

aventa pro 1st serious centerpin i,ve had, brilliant, smooth well ballanced but i im trying to work out how i can fit a line guard without impeding the running of the reel, i do tend to get overruns. not the reels fault, my inexperience. any ideas.

Yes I have the same problem with my aventa pro I still prefer the closed face for trotting

Bob James reel is made by J W Young. Lovely piece of kit - essentially a stripped down, lightweight Purist, as far as I can see. Made in this country - hence the price difference - but by a traditional company that offers proper back-up and knows the meaning of "customer service". Recently, they made a few small repairs to my old (1970s) Trudex for a ridiculously small amount (under a fiver... really) and returned it with a photocopy of the original brochure for interest. Nice firm.
