Brian ,for your stanton ,hold the spool thightly with your left hand (not the backplate) screw in the locking nut half way ,now tap the head of the nut with a hammer untill the spool moves if it don't jar free hit it harder ,if the bearings collapse and shatter and fall apart then they was probably rusted on anyway and needed replacing ! in the first place

Yes I think I can find it somewhere in the Vaults of Roe Towers

Stantons are bearing reels, got one of the originals that has seperate balls running in a raceway built into the reels (just fitted new balls for two quid and got it running from six seconds to i min. forty.!),so called true pins need oil,and as previously mentioned the best ones have an oil reservoir and dobber built inside the reel.is your engineering mate on something.?.

I did warn that he is a west ham fan !

I also phoned adcocks who told me "not designed for oil"

Now if you're talking grease..... Better shape up Cakey; simple enough though: hold your olivia newton john in the right hand and the backplate of the pin in the left, apply to the end of the spindle and then squeeze gently.... then similarly Travolta the spool.    Tadaaaaah.... job done ! 1950's hair contains enough lubricants for anything.

Though seriously, if you use grease then use graphited grease and almost none of it and I'd stick to using it inside spinning reels only.   Any grease is going to cause viscous drag compared to sewing machine oil.  I think Chavender is just being naughty and playing wind ups now....

.........and having a bit of success by the looks of it.

I cant believe your still on about to oil or not  to oil, if you want to then do if you dont then dont.

i can assure you that life wont really change either way.

Id love to leave it Tony but look waht the knobs are doing now, using the lyrics to "youre the one that I want" as the lyrics to Grease....................

Grease is the word.

It's got grove.
It's got meaning.
Grease is the time,
is the place,
is the motion.
Grease is the way we are feeling.

Oh Cakey, I post a message to you using the lyrics of YTOTIW and you don't even slightly seem to understand the hint..... *sob*

I shall sulk all day now.

Go grease my splines or something....

As a fanatical collector of Centrepins both old and new, I have in my collection some superb examples of early Allcocks, Grice and Young and Youngs reels, as well as more recent ones, including the Okuma reels. Sadly I still collect them! They cost me a fortune but give me so much pleasure to use, nearly forty of them have got line on for fishing from dace to carp, pike and barbel. Who needs the fixed spool reel!

The Adcock Stanton was one of my first centrepins, along with the Mordex Merlin and the old Leeds pin. They still see plenty of action after over 20 years of use!

So why all this nonsense about pins and bearings? They all have their place and use!

I have never needed to take of my drum, I have found a good soak in soapy water will soon fix any problem with the spin caused by dirt.

Enjoy your pin fishing,

Don
