Can anybody help? I have this week purchased a Middy 11.5m pole plus a range of second hand pole accessories. Is there anyone out there who has a begineers guide to pole fishing. I am looking at the basics, how to install elastic, which type to use, how to "fit" a connector, whats a "duberry" for, that type of info. As the pole is supplied with extra "top" sections what elastic should I use with each top section, which section should I install the bung (with winder). Any tips on what type of roller and or rest I should buy As I said basic information. Many thanks

Hi I just bought my first pole too. Ordered some ready made rigs from ebay to get me started. Pole is elasticated so don't need to worry about that. What other essentials would you recommend. Nothing will be to simple a recommendation as I am a total noob.

I have just bought my first pole too and after using it a couple of times I'm getting the hang of it now. I haven't got a pole roller yet but I use a large rod rest with a rubber top on a bank stick to support the pole when shipping back, with a quiver tip rest to support the front. I lay the spare top sections/cupping kit out of the way when not using them but I really would like a pole roost for keeping them safely out of the way. I have a DVD of Mr Bob Nudd pole fishing and have learned from that not to rush anything that I do when pole fishing, take your time shipping back, changing sections, baiting the hook e.t.c. I can see that it would be easy to damage the pole when rushing things. Having said that I did manage to stand on one of the spare top 2's before I had even used it so my advice is to keep them in a rod tube when they're not in use. My pole is a Maver Deploy 13M and while it's light to use at up to 9 or 10M it is pretty heavy to use for any length of time at full length.

Seems I am not the only one out there looking for simple instructions or "how to start pole fishing". Somebody has mentioned that Drennan do a pole fishing book anybody read it? Is it what we are looking for? I have seen a DVD featuring Bob Nudd but it was from the 90's so whilst some of it was good the quality left a bit to be desired (given what can be filmed these days) The commercials - elasticating a pole helped a lot - Many thanks Mark

John, Just spent yet another evening working on book proofs for my book done jointly with Graham Marsden (the FM editor) on Pole Fishing. Publication date is 25/2/08 - Crowood. If you Google it (Google 'Mark Wintle Pole Fishing') you'll find it on Amazon etc. It is very much aimed at getting a beginner started and through the learning curve to more advanced techniques.

Thanks for the answers Book looks good. My question was a bit more immediate though. Got my pole, got some made up rigs from ebay. If I want to take it and go fishing this weekend what other essential bits and pieces would I need

The book looks good. You c ould also have a look at "Match Fishing" magazine. They do instructional DVDs, etc.

 |
Quick list: Small shot - 8s and 10s, plummet, box to sit on that can be levelled if possible so that you are comfortable with thighs horizontal, small catapult if fishing beyond 8 metres. An eye shade/peaked cap for seeing float tip. Try starting shorter than full length for a few sessions even at four, five or six metres before progressing to longer lengths. Plumb the depth carefully, feed accurately. Once depth plumbed alter length of line above rig to pole tip (tie new loop & trim) to about two feet for starters.

There seems to be a number of instructional pole DVD's on the market can any one recommend one that is ideal for begineers (From the blurb on some of them a certain level of competence is assumed)

Hi John. I think this DVD is a good one. It covers how to elasticate your pole, set up a rig and other pointers. But perhaps you could try and rent it first. Hope this is of some help. I do know what you mean about some of them needing a level of competence but found this one very helpfull. I dont want anyone to spend their money on an item they may not like, hence my suggestion about renting. Regards. Trev.
