so struckanov your an instructor at the local fishing club, your mom brought you a fridge for your bait and youve never thought of putting maize meal in with maggots.  What advice did you give to your students before you posed this question on FM ?

Mark,

Several years ago I fished the home internationals in Scandinavia at a venue close to Hamar.

The Danish team brought their maggots with them and kept them in buckets in their rooms having emptied the hotel's ice machine to keep them cool.
Yup, you guessed it, first night they all escaped filtering down in the gaps in the old hotel flooring - net result loads of pi$$ed off Japanese tourists being woken at all hours of the morning with maggots dropping down onto their sleeping heads.

Needless to say the Danes were asked to leave that morning, and they got a hefty bill from the hotel for the Rentokil service, which I believe they never paid.

Mind you, as I used to import maggot from England I made a pretty penny the next day selling them fresh bait, and at only slightly inflated prices I hasten to add.

Damp maggots are classic escape artists.

May be they should have used DRY ICE

I have googled it, I have Yell.commed it but I can't seem to find anything approaching a maggot farm anywhere.

Apart from your local tackle shop, God knows where they get them, where do you get yours?

its possible dave ,,those where the days,

From April to October I always have at least a gallon of maggots and 150 lobworms in my bait fridge. I keep the maggots in plenty of maize meals in rectangular washing up bowls and whilst they will lose sizeover time they are normally pretty good for at least two weeks. The lobs last for months.

Well Trev, all my juniors are fly fishing so the question hasn't really come up yet... I'm so lucky to be a fly casting instructor as well

But at least now I know how to do things the rught way...

Thanks again everyone for all the serious (and less serious) replies

If you ever go fishing in Denmark you can ask me anything..!

I also forgot to mention that I used to just buy maggots in small plastic tubs which they couldn't get out off...

It's only within the last year that I really started course fishing that I've found the convenience in buying a large quantity and just keep them my self... Which also means I can get red maggots which no one has readily available, meaning that you have to buy a large quantity (1 Kg) of them before they will get it for you...

Tight lines

Strukanov,

I know those problems as I used to import gallons and gallons of maggot regularly into Norway when I lived there.

So, when you have a consideraqble financial investment every two weeks you certainly learn how to look after the little creatures properly.

Can you tell me, is that stupid groundbait limit (3 kilos?) still in force on the lakes at Skandeborg?

Show/hide user stats

As far as I am informed it is not in action nowadays...
But I cannot say for sure as I have only attended matches there and they definitely do NOT have a groundbait limit as some of the anglers started to feed 25-30 oranged sized balls of groundbait initially...

But I don't think it's in effect anymore... The "Danish Carp Anglers" cleared the name of match anglers using a big load of groundbait by proving that it had no direct impact on water quality and so on, thereby convincing the danish government that no such laws where needed any longer...
So I would be very surprised...

The number of match anglers has also decreased dramatically the last ten years or so, resulting in the problem of groundbait being very unlikely...

Denmark doesn't even manage to present a full match team for the internationals, only 12 of 15 seats are occupied nowadays...
