Personally I would stick to the best known makes (Shimano. Diawa, Fox, Okuma etc) and search the net for the best deals. There are many reviews on this website to help you decide which make & model.

What sort of fishing will you be using it for Dave? And what is your budget maximum? I have Shimanos, the Aero GTE 6000Bs which I use for barbelling, piking and carp mostly. Brilliant reels.

I use the Aero GTE 6000Bs too Pikey. I'd agree, brilliant reels, highly recommended. They can be picked up for significantly less than the £125 RRP often seen. I got mine for £52 each from a tackle shop selling on ebay (the website is still under development). Having said that I would go for the slighlty smaller 5000 size if I could as they would do the job equally as well.

They almost certainly would but I felt the 6000s matched my rods better plus I have a smaller Shimano Exage which I use when fishing one lighter weight rod set up. When I ordered them I got sent a 5000 and a 6000 by accident when I'd ordered two of the 5000s. In a way I'm glad they got the order wrong because I ended up swapping the 5 for another 6 just because I'd had the chance to seat them on the rods and have a play.

Dave - If you get a chance, have a lurk around the angling mags in W H Smith's. This month's IYCF have done a test review of 6 of the bestselling baitrunner reels. It may give you some pointers.

Go for shimano if you can not afford new the get second hand from ebay or the angling pages ads.

Read grahams write up on the shimano mini pit reels. £99 each from simpsons of turnford. i love my shimano 8000s but these are the nuts, got some after trying them, best reel around by far, and will cover a host of different styles. most places £120.

all depends on what you want to spend i've got to matched Okumas that do the job great at £35 quid each but i dream of a pair of Fox stratos all you can do is talk to people and judge what you want to spend.
