Beware of low breaking strains in braid.
The most common braid is 15 lb and there is reason for this. Braid is very difficult to manufacture in anything less than 15 lb. Its all to do with the least number of threads used to make up the braid. When you start taking out threads, the braid looses it's strength as its all in the weave of the threads that makes braid strong and there is a limited number that can be removed before the rest become too week.
You can get 8 lb but how reliable it is is anyone's guest.

Jason, I am an enthusiastic user of braid and use it a lot but only for ledgering or on the surface when piking. I use 4lb when targeting winter roach, 6lb when targeting chub and smaller barbel,8lb when after big bream and tench(my favorite species), 10lb when after big barbel or chucking a method to carp up to say 10lbs or so and use 30lb for big carp (very very rarely) and pike. What you must be careful of is to use a tippier rod than usual, so when you have a fish ready for netting and it lunges you do not get a hook pull. You will find that mono is best for waggler fishing but you must get a sinking one.

ALSO WITH BRAID YOU DO NOT NEED TO STRIKE AT ALL ---PLEASE JUST LIFT INTO THE FISH ! !

Braid is good for long range feeder fishing due to the sensitivity from it's lack of stretch.

It's strength to diameter is far greater than mono which also makes it good for lure fishing giving the casting distance of a much weaker mono combined with the strength to pull expensive lures out of snags.

Again the lack of stretch is favoured by pikers for it's increased sensitivity and therefore bite indication.

It's downside is, somewhat ironically, it's lack of stretch. I would not use it for float fishing for smaller fish as Steve says you can suffer hook pulls as there is no give in the line.

It's all about the right tool for the job, sometimes braid is best and others mono fits the bill.

braid wont work for float fishing ,for ledgering and feeder fishing use SINKING braid ,floating braid is used for marker and spodding .

I prefer sinking braid on the marker rod as it puts you in a more direct contact with the feature-finding lead.

i may have got it wrong on marker float .

I don't think that there is a hard and fast rule for Spod and/or Marker rods, just personal preferrence.

Some people swear by floating braids for both and I certainly use a floating braid on my spod rods; as you don't want anything sinking if it is avoidable. In that way you can retrieve the spod quickly across the surface.
