hi all does any one know how big the barbel are going to in the river don now had fish to about 8lb out on the top off the salmon run heard rumours about fish oner 12lb any one heard owt ?

 nope

Barbel are now spreading nicely through the Don system. There have been a few doubles, but they are few and far between. Most of the doubles reported have been estimated or wrongly weighed. A good target for the Don is a fish over 9lb and my pb off the river is 9lb 10oz - but then I am a crap angler!

yeah your about spot on there sean i've fished for them at sprotbrough and a 9lber is a good fish more chance of a double figure carp down there at min the only place round here with a good head of catchable double figure barbel is the dearne i know of two 12's last week and last season went up to 13 lot's of big uns 8lb plus fish common for a tiny river these are very good fish

Fish over 13lb have come out of the Don close to where you've fished Craig, and the river record is knocking 14lb, but these beasts are few and far between. An 8lber is still a good fish.

John you wrote, Fish over 13lb have come out of the Don close to where you've fished Craig, and the river record is knocking 14lb, but these beasts are few and far between. An 8lber is still a good fish. Have you personal knowledge of a 14lb Don barbel John i have seen some poor photos of supposed doubles but i would dearly like to see a pic of a genuine fish of such a size. webo.
Alas I've no Personal Knowlege Webo, I was shown a picture by an angler on the bank of the Don of a fish claimed at 13-6, the picture showed an area of the Don I recognised, and a fish that looked the part to my eyes. The official river record is 13-10 as on the most recent updated list of river records, that was, up untill recently, kept by Brain Dowling, whose list was recognised by all the major barbel groups, specialist groups and angling media.

Ok thanks Jon nice to know they are in there,i hope to put some time in this year so hopefully i will see some decent fish for myself. tight lines Webbo.

hey lads what an up and coming river the don is who would believe it 12's 13's they are cracking fish for a small ex-polluted river barbel falls
No so ex-polluted just yet, getting better though. many of the barbel I have seen are a scabby sorry sight.
Tony i have to agree with you about the appearance of some of the Don fish and this has been discussed before, the bailiff told me the reason for the lack of fins/tails was due to a deficiancy in there diet at the fish farm they were from and they were like that when stocked????
Thats not what I believe to be the case. I thought they were Calverton fish. Its down to the massive build up off heavy metals in the silt/bed of the river. The water may be clean now but the legacy of Sheffields industrial past still exists.
That's really disturbing Tony. I have posted on here recently about plans by Durham University to widen and deepen a 2km stretch of my local R Wear in Co Durham. There are 100's of years of industrial waste and heavy metals from long abandoned coal and lead mines just waiting to be released. What cost 'Olympic Gold' in 2012? That's the argument they are putting forward for wanting to create an international standard rowing course.

That sounds like bad news to me John. If you've got any contacts you might want to point them in the direction of the cleanup of the Great Lakes in the US. They had a similar problem to the xtent that people were told not to eat fish caught there more than once a week and then only to eat the white flesh.
