Hi guys can any one direct me to some one who sells 100lb mono in any thing less than bulk spools 50 or 100yrds max would be ok,i have looked on t,internet but can only find pre made leaders or bulk spools.

I want to try mono for up traces this year in stead of wire which only lasts a couple of fish,i am sure i saw a Nige Williams article saying how good a material it is for this.

Cheers guys and Tight Lines.

I brought a few meters of eBay a while ago maybe worth looking there.

I don't see the benefit over wire for up traces though.

Cheers dave i just thought it would not kink like wire does.

webbo

Interesting idea but would not a pike still slice through mono regardless of bs ?
Show/hide user stats

Apparently not,

100lb mono is used for trace material for Ling which have teeth to match Pike.

I first saw an article in one of the weeklys by Nige Williams regarding its use though i have not tried it myself.

If any one has any experience of using it i would appreciate any input both for and against.

Having been a beach angler for many years before I ever tried pike fishing, I've had my fair share of big mouths off the marks at Anstruther, Cellardyke, Crail, Pittenweem and St. Monans. Ling used to feature fairly regularly and I can assure you, they most certainly do not have teeth to match pike. They have the right gear for pulverising crabs, lobsters, shellfish and anything a bit crunchy but they don't have the 300 or so scalpel-like teeth that a pike has. Power, yes. Cutting power, no. Ling also don't take off at 30mph. Ling can fight like hell but they aren't exactly breaking any records for speed. Run some mono along the edge of a blunt knife at 30mph and it'll cut like play-dough. If you can cut mono, running it along a knife, it can get cut by pike. Ling and pike are quite possibly two of the most different fish there are. On my distance outfit I use upto 60lb Amnesia shock-leaders but I still use wire at the business end.

Webbo, it dosn't kink, but a decent supple trace such as a 49 strand dosn't kink much either. I've not had any problems with uptraces kinking.... or at least not to the extent that the hook trace does.

(thick) mono comes with it's own problems, mainly the double crimps that you need because it's too thick to tie... or at least the stuff I have is.

40lb ti wire severel outlets have it now the esox stuff should be availale from most drennan stockists. may be the odd problem with this stuff though i know the 30 lb is suspect http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3ebI59jeKCY.

but i use now the 40lb fox carboflex, cant fault it its easlily crimped and twisted and its very fish friendly to boot

Cheers guys looks like i will be sticking to the tried and tested wire.

Try eddie turners bleeding wire....absolutely brilliant for uptraces..you can get it direct off his website...
Fox 'Carboflex' or one of the thicker coated wires like Drennan 'Green Pike Wire' seems okay to me.

Chris - take a look at the bleeding wire from ET...you'll love it mate. Like you say, its coated, and a true 7 strand, Ive used ir for a couple of years now and uptraces just dont kink....its great for trolling too !

Cheers Gary,

I'll maybe pop along and see Eddie at the Cambs meet.

Cheers Gary i will be ordering some bleeding wire shortly, would you crimp it or knot it as the link on Eddys website suggests.

Got a spool of the carbo flex last week and got to say it fits the bill perfectly for me.  Seemed great for uptraces at the weekend, shame it only got tested by a couple of jacks really.  So far so good

I made a sunken float uptrace with coated wire fed up some shrink-tube from Maplins. It's pretty stiff but it's neat and it doesn't kink. I've also used the same principle for making a long tangle-free bouyant lead-link for a CD type rig.

What's a CD type rig please............?!
