i had a 4lb rainbow countless smaller rainbows and brownies averaging 2 to 3 lb lots of grayling around 1lb mark and some good dace and all this in low crystal clear water and a bright sunny day .i fished it friday the 10th my brothers mate fished it sunday the 12th and also had a great day ,whereas on the saturday we fished the royalty in christchurch staying overnight to do so let me just say the difference in rivers is immence it resembled a carp fishery with some 50 or so barbel anglers jostling for space to chuck there 9 ounces of lead on sea fishing gear to catch the same barbel they have seen in the paper the week before. we ended up fishing quite a wild swim called jonstones down past the road bridge that was obviously miles to far from the car park for comfort for the rest and it turned out to be worth it my mate caught 4lb 10 ounce sea trout that gave him the fight of it's life an absolutely fantastic fish it was even better seeing it swim off after.

I have to agree with you mjw. The Timsbury stretch, like the Lower Itchen Fishery stretch, is a great place to fish with some pristine specimens to be caught. Pricey, yes, but worth it, definitely. I also echo your thoughts about sea trout - my god, do they fight!!!! (will wreck your grayling swim though, but it's easy enough to walk a little further upstream or downstream). I have the same opinion as you of the Royalty. It is a nice fishery, but it's becomming the target of those who fish almost exclusively for barbel. A couple of mates and me were fishing The Piles stretch the last time we visited and were happily catching chub and bream with a couple of small (3lb-ish) barbel when four anglers set up directly opposite on the lawn area - we had to move. You can be forgiven for thinking that it is now suffering from too much angling pressure. The Johnson's stretch is towards the end of the Royalty and this area is not renowned for it's barbel, hence it tends to be a bit quieter.

i knew there were still some normal anglers out there

I too fished the Royalty a few weeks ago, I was down that way and had my gear with me( as you do) so thought I'd give it a go, never again. Its just like a commercial fishery really. I'l deffinately be giving timsbury a go though in the near future, thanks for the info Jamie hopefully I'l have something to report back with. Mark

also got the river itchen at gaitors mill booked for next friday far more grayling there than the test mate well worth a go.

Jamie, recommend 'The Cliffs' beat at Gators Mill. Plenty of grayling there (but watch out for the trout and sea trout!!). The Upper and Lower Pike Pool stretch holds some good chub, my best from here was 5lb 2oz. Warning!! The Upper and Lower Round The Bend stretch nearer the motorway bridge has carp in it (who put them there??). Had one over 10lb. Have a good day's fishing.

that,s interesting cheers phil i will try there i usually start at the bridge swim at the very top i sit on the bridge and fish the long run with the bend and the salmon lay up at the end never fail there had one well over two pound last year. but you always end up walking the best part of the river anyway ithas to be up there with my favorites iv'e no doubt it's the same for you mate.
