Hi, I've found a reference (dated 1998) to a book called The Ashurst Legend which was about Kevin Ashurst (and his father Benny Ashurst aswell I'm guessing) apparantly written by John Bailey, exerpts of which appeared in Angling Times. I have utterly failed to track down anything more about it. Can anyone help?

You look like my next door neighbour. I realise this is no help whatsoever. **have you checked amazon, ebay and coch y bondu (sp)?
EC- Yes I have tried all of those and more.
You could write direct to John Bailey, I am sure you could contact him somehow!
I've got copies of: Match fishing with Benny Ashurst by Peter Collins and World class match fishing by Kevin Ashurst with Colin Dyson.

Jon, you sure John Bailey wrote a book about them ?not his type of fishing i wouldnt have thought

I knew of this book but never saw a copy so I asked John Bailey about it. When AT serialised the book they so sensationalised what happened to Kevin's son Keith that Kevin was very upset and demanded that the book be withdrawn. And that is what happened to it. So yes John Bailey wrote it. AT serialised it. And you won't find it in Bookfinder, ebay or Amazon. I couldn't even spot it at Crowood when I visited.

Mystery solved. Thank for the information Mark. Why am I not surprised at AT's sensationalisation? The behaviour of the press often disgusts me. Just yesterday there was that case of some friends of the McCanns who had successfully sued some paper for libel. Reminds me of a line from a film along the lines that you should believe nothing that you read and only half of what you see.

Keith Ashurst was a lovely lad, he`d often come and sit in my bivvy when we fished Pilsworth in the 70s, he was only young then, it must have been terrible for the family and my heart really went out for them. One of the nicest families you could ever wish to me.

Kevin will be fishing the winter leauge this year on the Weaver.
I was under the impression that Kevin lived in Ireland now but if he's fishing the Weaver league that is patently not the case. He is your original brusque northerner or was anyway, I see from that report that his marriage split up as well, what a shame, his wife was a very pleasant lady and I used to sit and have a chat with her every year at the Evesham festival.

i grew up with kevins son, and fished and drank with kevin and benny. Benny's party trick was playing the spoons, what a character. A proper gent
He called the spoons his 'fettling irons' ---Because he used to use 2 spoons to change the tyre on his bike if he had a puncture when he cycled up to fish the Lanky canal inthe old days

The man was a roach god and the simplicity of his tackle had to be seen to be believed,i watched him trimming plain unpainted peacock quill with a knife until it sat right and then thrash everyone in sight especially me on the next peg ...
