Section of Fishery or river stretch:...Above Preston
Date:...20/08/08
Time fished:...19:00hrs to 00:30hrs
Weather conditions:...Heavy showers, a very dark wet evening.

Water conditions:...Rivercall @ 03:14hrs @NJR 0.6 something M ANSL and falling, the river hadn't fallen much by the start of the session, at midnight it started to rise very fast.
Air temperature:...18C only dropping  to 17.4C by the end of the session
Water Temperature:...15.6C
Bait:...Bread flake, crust/cheese paste, pellet & paste and sweet corn.
Method:...2 rods, upstream rod bread flake or crust/cheese paste with liquidised bread seaweed & garlic in the feeder, downstream rod halibut pellet, min PVA bags of Pellets and paste and loose fed pellets. As soon as the eels started pecking at the pellets I changed to sweet corn with sweet corn in feeder.

Results:...23:10hrs 4lb-10oz Chub – Crust/cheese paste,  23:30hrs 4lb-14oz Chub - Crust/cheese paste,  00:15hrs 4lb- 8oz Chub – Sweet corn.  Also during session 2 small Barbel, 1 small Chub and a 1lb roach (weighed).

Brief description of the session & remarks:...The river was still running high when I arrived but steady. There wasn’t much happening for the 1st couple of hours, other than eels pecking and nibbling at my pellets. However, I did pick up a very nice roach when I changed onto sweet corn, I was tempted to size down and try for the roach but stuck with my set-up for the Chub.  The 3 fat Chub came late in the session and I also lost a another good Chub to a hook pull just as I was bending over to pick up my landing net, just as I thought I had it under control it made a big dash down river and into the bank.  Once I was into the Chub I thought, that’s it I’m into a very late session, but as the river started to rise very fast I packed up and made the long trudge back to my van in the rain but very happy with those 3 very beautiful fat Chub.

Section of Fishery or river stretch:...Above Preston
Date:...22/08/08
Time fished:...19:00hrs to 01:00hrs
Weather conditions:...Over cast with a light breeze, very dark night..

Water conditions:...Rivercall @ 03:14hrs @NJR 0.44 M ANSL and falling, fell slowly through the session.
Air temperature:...15.6C dropping  to 12.2C by the end of the session
Water Temperature:...15.1C
Bait:...Bread flake, crust/cheese paste and sweet corn.
Method:...2 rods, upstream rod bread flake or crust/cheese paste with liquidised bread seaweed & garlic in the feeder, downstream rod sweet corn with sweet corn in feeder.

Results:...7 Chub to 4lb-4oz, which was caught bang on mid night on crust and cheese paste, also 2 small Barbel to 5lb

Brief description of the session & remarks:... The river and conditions were excellent for Chub fishing, however, most of the near 4 pounders looked long and lean and only 1 over 4lb made it to the net.  I also had 3 hook pulls from chub coming to the net, all seemed to be 3lb plus or bigger.  Plenty going on throughout the session, some of the chub were caught touch legering.  The sweet corn seems to have work with eels avoidance, but its early days yet, I have had eels on sweet corn on the Lancaster canal and the river Lune.

Section of Fishery or river stretch:...Above Preston
Date:...24/08/08
Time fished:...18:30hrs to 24:00hrs
Weather conditions:...Sunny intervals, light breeze, clear sky by mid night, late moorrise.

Water conditions:...Rivercall @ 04:14hrs @NJR 0.22 M ANSL and falling, fell slowly through the session.
Air temperature:...22.9C dropping  to 13.3C by the end of the session
Water Temperature:...17.4C
Bait:...Bread flake, crust/cheese paste and sweet corn.
Method:...2 rods, upstream rod bread flake or crust/cheese paste with liquidised bread seaweed & garlic in the feeder, downstream rod sweet corn with sweet corn in feeder.

Results:...19:05hrs 4lb-7oz Chub - Sweetcorn.   22:35hrs 4lb-14oz Chub - Bread Flake.  22:55hrs 4lb-12oz Chub Sweetcron.  also 3 smaller Chub to 3lb-4oz, another 1lb-4oz Roach and an eel about 1lb.

Brief description of the session & remarks:...A very pleasant evening and I had this stretch of the river all to myself.  Just after dusk as I was slipping into an isotope trance when my upstream rod slammed over with the clutch screaming from the offset and as I lifted into a very heavy fish, bang went my line, clean snap at the swivel.  I only had 6lb line on this rod.  I changer both rods on to 10lb hook lengths just in case but in this swim there are very few Barbel but when the do turn up they are generally quite big.  There was also another strange happening, I was absolutely sure I'd just guided a large Chub into my landing net but when I lifted the net it was empty, probably an hook pull just as I thought it was in the net. Once again, it was nice to pick up another 3 big fat Chub and the walk back to my van was also a pleasant one with a very big half moon raising from behind Pendle Hill.

Results:.. 2 Chub best 3lb-5oz, 1 eel and 1 Barbel @ 6lb-12oz
Brief description of the session & remarks:...The river looked good but everything was very quiet and still.  The only bites I got were the fish I caught.  I saw a couple of other anglers speaking to one for a short while, it's nice to talk.  It was still very humid and hot walking back to my van at one in the morning, you just had that felling that something was going to happen, I'd heard on the radio that on Sunday there is going to be a mini monsoon????

Section of Fishery or river stretch: Ribble
Date: 29/8/08
Time fished: 13:45 - 17:00
Weather conditions: dry calm and warm
Water conditions: Up a couple of feet and nice colour
Air temperature: N/T
Water Temperature: N/T
Bait: Hemp, caster, corn
Method: Waggler
Results: Slow.... some nice dace and a odd chub
Brief description of the session & remarks: The river was busy and looked at several areas and all were the same. Plenty of Salmon anglers about.

The conditions looked good, but it started slow and didn't get any better. Nothing like it's usual self, with odd fish showing, but never a sense there were fish competing for food like normal. Moved to a differnt peg, but no change. Toyed with going to the car for the feeder rod, but chose an early exit.

I noticed after about 20 mins of fishing that there was a cormorant in the tree opposite me, just 50 yards away and it didn't spook even when I tried to spook it. They seem to be everywhere these days and less scared of human activity.

With no shoal fish about, I was tempted to put 2 and 2 together.......

Bait:...Bread flake, crust/cheese paste and sweet corn.
Method:..2 rods, upstream rod bread flake or crust/cheese paste with liquidised bread seaweed & garlic in the feeder, downstream rod sweet corn with sweet corn in feeder.
Results:...5 Chub to 3lb-11oz
Brief description of the session & remarks:...Once again the river looked good with loads of fish toping and a few salmon/sea trout crashing about.  My rods were rattling and twitching all through the session, 3 of the 5 Chub were taken on sweetcorn and they hooked themselves, they were also the smallest, and the other 2 were taken on bread/cheese paste and were picked up by touch ledgering.  I had to leave early, busy week at work all next week.

Method:..2 rods, upstream rod bread flake or crust/cheese paste with liquidised bread in the feeder, downstream rod sweet corn with sweet corn in feeder.
Results:...2 Chub to 4lb-08oz, 2 Barbel to 7lb-8oz and 1 Roach 1lb-10oz
Brief description of the session & remarks:...Due to work commitments and river levels it seemed ages since I was on the Ribble, so I was going to go Friday night come what may.  This was a bit of a dismal session in very dark wet conditions and I was fast coming down with a cold, which made the long trek back to my van a very miserable walk indeed.  However, I did catch a few fish and the roach was a PB on the Ribble for me

Results:...4 Chub to 4lb-03oz and 3 small Barbel to 2lb-12oz
Brief description of the session & remarks:...Quick trip down to the Ribble for a few hours.  The river seemed very quiet with very few anglers around.  Just one decent Chub but no eels, should I go back onto pellets and risk being plagued by eels?  The sweetcorn seems to be work on the eel avoidance front but the size of fish being picked up on sweetcron is very variable size wise.

Brief description of the session & remarks:... Arrived at the river in a good mood, start of 2 weeks holiday, and I wasn't too bothered at the lack of action before dusk.  It was nice just to sit and enjoy the peace and beauty of the Ribble.  This session turn into one to remember with 2 chub just under 4lb, 2 @ 4lb plus, 1 @ 5lb plus and my 1st 6lb'er of the new season.  The big common, I'm sure I've had before at 18lb and like that one it just stripped 50M off my reel on it's first run but unlike big Barbel it lacked stamina and after another 30M run came reasonable quietly to the net.  Never the less I was still shaking a wee bit for the next 10 mins.  Thanks Gavin for taking my pic with the carp and the big Chub they've come out OK.  I can now live on this session for a few months and it pays for all those miserable wet walks back to the van after blank sessions, and to top it all just after I left the car park I stopped to let a small herd of deer cross the lane, magic what else can I say.

Results:...2 Chub to 4lb-8oz, and a 13lb mirror
Brief description of the session & remarks:... I'm on holiday now so I thought about trying a popular spot mid week, forgot about those working shifts or also on holiday?  It was very slow during the day with just an odd knock about every 20 mins.  Decided to touch leger on my bread rod and after a few very tentative pulls I made contact with the Mirror Carp just before dusk.  At first I though it was an extremely large chub, it didn't fight very well for a carp, then a couple of rod lengths out it swirled showing that distinctive carp dorsal and then mucked about for a few minutes before coming to the net.  The two Chub looked a bit thin and empty and were quite floppy to handle but I'm always happy to land a 4lb plus Chub and the 4-1/2 pounder is a five in the making.  Very pleasant walk back to the car park, Ha Ha no work tomorrow.

Brief description of the session & remarks:...Very pleasant evening to be sitting on the river bank.  The session was very slow with hardly any movement on the rod tips, probably a knock every half hour. The Chub, which came to touch legering on crust/cheese paste, again looked thin with a huge head I was sure it was nearly a six as it slid over the net.

Brief description of the session & remarks:...It was another pleasant evening to be sitting on the banks of the Ribble but not a very active session regarding bites.  Two of the Chub over 4lb came to sweetcorn including the eel and the last Chub of the session came to touch legering with Bread Flake.  Both of the 4lb plus Chub felt hollow and limp when being returned and didn't look in pristine condition, possibly old and bigger Chub beginning to loose condition?

Section of Fishery or river stretch: Ribble
Date: 28/9/08
Time fished: 13:30 till 19:00 with a few breaks..
Weather conditions: Dry and sunny
Water conditions: Normal level....for once!
Air temperature: N/T pleasant whilst the sun was out, but went cold at dusk
Water Temperature: N/T
Bait: Hemp / Corn / Pellet / maggot
Method: Waggler
Results: 1 barbel about 3lb, 2 chub 4lb 14oz and one that I guessed was tad less but not weighed.
Brief description of the session & remarks: Slow and more than slightly concerned by the lack of shoal fish in general this season. Fished a peg that is a banker for chub, dace and odd roach, but for the first time ever, no smaller fish whatsoever!! I even fed maggot went down in hook size and still no takers except the biggest chub. Nothing at all topping either, except the odd trout, which is not the norm on a calm evening. It's been the story of the season and I am wondering what's going on. Increase in cormorant activity? Something is wrong on the small fish front.

Took the other chub and barbel on corn and only had 5 bites all day. Hence I took a few breaks from standing waded in the river, which is hard going when it's desperately slow. It felt mighty cold out there when then sun dipped behind the trees.

Brief description of the session & remarks:...Seems ages since I was on the river, I've been waiting all week for it to drop, plus I'm busy at work.  Very slow to begin with, with about one bite every 30 mins.  No knocks or taps all the Chub came to the rod tip wrapping round all the way. Bit of a nasty night to be on the river bank especially late on when it started to rain.  Still when the 4lb plus Chub are coming to the net its well worth it.
