I was talking to Graham M earlier this week about his use of Heavy Metal Extra as seen in the October issue of CF where he rolls it into a very thin sausage and substitues it for number eight shot on the line with a stick float sep up. What a brilliant idea I thought when I read it, especially for people like me who drop more shot than ever goes on the line due to lack of feeling in the fingertips. Reading it got me thinking of the other different uses for this stuff and Graham said that he uses it for a number of things such as tying down the hook length on a feeder set up, weighting down a pop up, as a substitute for backleading. The advantage is that you can roll it into a long sausage shape or a number of small sausage shapes (mouse droppings) and this makes it less obtrusive of course. I have been toying with ideas for using it as a substitute for the bulk shot on a waggler set up because I have a thing about not using bulk shotting because of the danger of pinching the line, actually on the base of the waggler itself is one idea I had or on the tubing of the Preston waggler adaptors is another. Moulding round the shank of a hook when using paste to give it something to grip on to is another, as yet I havn't tried it but I certainly will be. Does anyone else think this is a very good product with a number of uses and what uses do you think it can be put to?

With advantage Extra Heavy Metal will replace shot in a lot of circumstances. It will even replace artificial flies for the fly fisherman.

Graham, I've been useing it for sometime for basicly the same reasons you state. I'm sure some will recall my complaints about split shot and line damage some while ago,my initial use led me to this mostly unsung multi use product. I also run some of my hooklengths through it, it picks up particles, and I believe helps to hold down the length,(not scientificly tested) just a confidence thing.

Ehhh?.

Now theres an interesting idea if it works Fred. I have used the old Heavy Metal for a long time but it doesn't have the adhesive qualities that the new version has which meant using it round a shot or something. Being more adhesive opens up a whole new set of possible uses I think though Graham did point out that it isn't quite as unmoving on very shiny surfaces.

Grahan You 'twiddle' it along the line until it coats the line almost like paint to help pin it down.
|
 |
Graham, the new H/ Metals much better than the old stuff now Kryston make it on site, it adeheres much better than the old stuff For wagglering you will have to fix it to the bottom of the wag or onto drennan stops, as the inertia on casting will make it slip on 3-4lb lines, unles your fishing closeish in, for pole fishing you wont beat it for short distance floatfishing, damaged line is a thing of the past. Yes Freds right, if you fix it on your line then remove it you will see it leaves a slight residue of particles, the merest amount rolled on your line will stay put, no problem, and dont forget its re-usable.

I've had the same piece of Kryston heavy metal on my hooklength for three sessions now. I also gave a piece to a mate, to make a water tight seel around a makeshift ariel on a feature finder that he was botching up on the bank.

Yes, I see what you mean about the inertia Mr Spiders but when Graham and I discussed it on the phone he suggested using a Stots No 8 either side of the float and then moulding the stuff round it which is a viable option. At the moment I use a Drennan waggler adaptor which is bridge shaped secured by fine polefloat tubing and tie a small loop of 3lb line to the bottom of the waggler and put my bulk shot on the loop which then goes in the bridge. This enables me to change the waggler if I need to and keeps the heavy shot off the mainline to avoid damage. The drawback is that if it snags you are liable to lose the wagger because it pulls the wire out of the tubing. Whichever set up I decide on, being able to change the waggler is a must as I find this a necessity on some occasions and this may require using a clip swivel or something.

When I get my test batch, I shall be twirling some of the heavy metal in various colours around a nymph hook to suggest a midge pupa (buzzer) This will be tied as the point "fly" in a 3 fly leader. Being the heaviest is should give good turn over.

It will sink like a stone ............It's very dense Ron
|
 |
The stuff is fantastic I use it on all my Combi-rigs Very tacky...holds well I can see where Ron is coming from...czech Nyph type things
|
 |
But it's 95% Tungsten, which has a density of 1.6856 X density of lead.
|
 |
or 1.6991 x , depending on which figures you use (bloody americans!) Density of lead = 11.3 g/cm^3 Density of tungsten = 19.2 g/cm^3

use 2 stotts no 8, mould metal round them and use drennan stop above wag When I get my test batch, Hell Ron, I got my test batch a year ago,100 pots of it

Ed, Dave tells me it's very close to lead in terms of SG. I received my test batch about 2 hours ago. All sorts of ideas are going throught my head as I am sure are going through the minds of many others. Here again Kryston have put onto the market an superior innovative product that is a credit to their track record. By the way Dave, my invoice is in the post.

He received it whilst I was speaking to him and - he shredded it!

Oh goodie: more expert field testing to be out soon.
"Here again Kryston have put onto the market an superior innovative product that is a credit to their track record."
Wow, that was quick Ron . . . . .
"I received my test batch about 2 hours ago."
No, I take that back, quick hardly describes it, does it!
Get a grip man.

For the record, you will find many of this Company's products in my tackle boxes including their original Heavy Metal.
|
 |
Get a grip man. You will find that Heavy Metal Extra does just that. It's grip is fantastic.
I used it recently on the Ribble with 6 foot on and rising. There was allsorts of crap hanging on my line each time I brought in the 6oz of lead. However, the Heavy Metal Extra did not budge.
