Claimed Spool Capacities?

Hi,

I just got my two Abu 302FR freerunners and they're lovely.

I also got two 300yd spools of 30lb Spiderline Catfish Fusion. I've read all the reviews and know it's not too popular, but it was cheap and will probably be fine.

The claimed capacity for the 302FR is 200m of .25mm line.

I'm not sure what the diameter of the Catfish Fusion is, but most 30lb-ish braids seem to be of around .20m - .25mm diameter.

In thoery, this means that I should get about 220yd of .25mm (worst case) Catfish Fusion on my 302FR spools, doesn't it?.

These calculations are what I based my decision to buy two 300yd spools of braid on.

After filling my 302FR spools with braid (no mono backing - straight onto the spool. I want the spools to be full of only one continuous line - no knots) to about 2mm - 3mm of the lip, there seemed to be LOADS left on the line spools.

I used one separate line spool to fill each separate reel spool.

I managed to also fill (from empty) the spool from my old DAM Quick SEL40 from one of the line spools, and there was still line left on the line spool.

Are the claimed reel spool capacities optimistic or exaggerated or was there WAY more line on the Catfish Fusion spools than the advertised 300yds?

What's going on?

Mark

can't say I ever bother takin the time to read the capacities, I just make sure I but enough line to fill the spool, if you have more left over and your spool is full I wouldn't worry, not like you were left short by the quoted capacities which would have been a pain in the arse

I never worry either as I back all my spools in gaffer tape to reduce the amount needed to fill the spool. Cheaper that way.

maybe find out what the diameter of the braid actually is....

I would say that a 30lbs braid is normally 0.30-0.40 mm. Since they are not round it is not easy to measure but they will still take the equivalent amount of place on the spool. Some braids measured:http://www.tacklebox.co.uk/line_tests.htm
