get one of those sticks you rub on your arms and legs, works a treat. I use (after the other week) Autan active insect repellent and it works well.

Just go into boots or something similar and there will be loads of things. Nasty things but the ones you've got to watch out for are the horse flies!

.jpg) Best product I've ever used is Jungle Formula. This is available in most high street chemists as both liquid and aerosol versions and really works. Try to keep it off your hands though as it will drop your catch rate. If you do taint your fingers with it rub them in some bankside soil to clean it off. I'm a midge magnet so I never leave home without it. Tight lines, Rob.

Citronella Tea candles do it for me. I put one in a small jar next to my chair and that keeps the little buggers away. I have tried chemicals but I don't get on with them, I don't like the smell or the way they feel on the hide.
That reminds me I had better put some in my rucksack.

The little devils up here in Scotland bite like a Glasgow Kiss. Avons Skin So Soft in the oil version is the most popular here. It works.

Mike, never personally been bitten on the arse as you seem to have been. :0) I think some of us are more prone to reactions to midge bites than others,I suffer just like you seem to. I have not found anything that stops the blighters yet, spent a while in Aus, and even their remedies didnt work,I use a Mozzie net over my cap, and long sleeves on my shirt. Look a bit of a prat though. If anybody has any other ideas for anti bug spray do let me know... P.S. They use the Avon skin so soft oil in Aus, works for some people there, not me :0(

Don't bother with crocodile. See review on fishingmagic. Bought some but don't work too well. Jungle is better.

What's wrong with midges (chironomids)? They don't bite at all.
I think some of you might be confusing them with gnats or mosquitoes. And even here they have never worried me unduly.
Ah but horseflies - that's another thing. Even worse is a tsetse fly and I've been zapped with those things on many occasions. It's like a blunt injection.

Not gnats or mosquitoes, but the biting midge. (Best left in Scotland.) I think due to the very wet weather have moved south of the border. Got attacked by some miniscule midgy thing the other week at local fishery. Only ever been bitten by the notorious Scottish midge on the west coast of Scotland. Both apeared very similar.

My knowledge of biting midges is scant. I thought they were only found in areas above the Arctic Circle.
I hope for all our sakes it is not the anopheles mosquito which carries malaria. Had a bout of it once and it's not funny.
With this very wet summer, beware of certain afflictions that can strike you unawares. Like the Dhobi Itch, Dengue Fever and Green Bile Squitters!
Botflies are not very nice either, they can fly at 60mph and lay their egg under your skin which hatches out into a large grub which according to legend, eats its way to your brain!!!
Uuugghh!!!

Had a colleague that got bit on his leg when fishing. Ended up at doctors with lump on leg, got antihistamine for same. Some weeks later, when fed up with itchy lump on leg, he squeezed the thing. The lump popped, and then he pulled out a maggot/grub. Not bad for produce yourb own bait. I asked him if he was going to send it off for analasis but he declined.

 Smoke a joint.
You breath it in, the midges or gnats breath it in and neither of you could give a toss then what happens.

More information about botflies here. And what horrible little bastards they are...

Some people swear that by eating Marmite is effective. Worth a try if you like it.
|
 |
Neither myself nor my gout like Marmite.
It's not the Botfly that attacks you David, they attach their eggs to a mosquito which deposits them under your skin when they bite you.
In my opinion the worst bite I ever experienced was from a brown recluse spider. You can't feel the bite inself, but some time later the swelling is horrific and the pain is excruciating.
These bites can cause massive wounds which eat into your flesh, bit by bit. People have died from a brown recluse bite and in many cases massive disfigurements have occured and limbs have had to be amputated.
These spiders have the habit of inhabiting dark places in houses and often climb into bed with you or get in your clothes. They are not a big spider, only about an inch across and they have a characteristic violin marking on their backs.
They were originally indigenous to North Africa bordering the Mediterranean but are now found in many countries of the world, including Southern Africa and most of the Americas.
Give me a black widow any time. You can easily recognise them and their nests and they are not aggressive.

The worst bite I every had was from my cat, I went to the hospital and said I was thinking of not attending. The doctor laughed and said I would of been back within a few hours in agony!!
Seriously on the fly thing I'm sure someone mentioned zinc tablets as a fix for this but was unsure whether to believe it.

I`ve got some Tea Tree wipes. Simple and they work a treat.
