After striking into a nice mirror carp and half an hour of arm ache i managed to lose the fish just before the net. I noticed i hadn't hooked the fish just the lead that he was trailing about. With all the safety tackle about why are people still using fixed leads?
Anyway a couple of hours later i had the same fish on again hooked on the leads swivel this time and my daughter managed to net him. The fish must have been stressed out dragging that heavy pear lead around, but the hook looked quite new so hopefully it hadn't been caught up long. Weighed in at 17lb 5oz. As its the biggest mirror carp ive caught does it count as my pb?
I don't feel it does, what do you think?

no.... no different to netting one out.
but its what you think that counts.

What counts is you managed to remove the offending tackle and put it back safely.
I would count that as a PB on its own.

I thought it was strange really that i only had one other fish in 48 hours with others catching regular a few swims away, and this mirror came on the last morning. But he must have been roaming about in front of me for ages, its got to put off the other fish I'd imagine. Although the bream didn't seem to mind. Cheers for that I'll say its my pb for now and put the photo up.

Personally i'd say a foul hooked fish is not your fish because it hasn't actually taken the bait that you put out for it. Seeing as its not been foul hooked but hooked by the trailing rig, again i don't think it counts cause it hasn't taken the bait. Its really personal opinion though. If you feel comfortable telling people that your PB is 17lb but knowing it didn't take your bait then feel free. Like mithrandir said, the most important thing is that the carp returned to the lake without a trailing rig. Usually people who use fixed leads are people who are new to the sport and don't bother reading up on how to carp fish. Generally just keep an eye out for em...

Poult, i think you are splitting hairs, it would count in a match ,it was landed so i would count as a pb well done Spoddy
|
 |
it wouldn't count in a match as it wasn't hooked fairly in the mouth, the same as it wouldn't count for any records
|
 |
spoddy....it will always be at the back of your mind that it wasnt your bait, not your rig and not your swim choice. get out there and catch a bigger one on your own merits....you will feel a lot better
|
 |
yes you couldnt really count it to be fair because it wasnt hooked by fair means, but yiou must take some credit for hooking it in the first place of course and could record it in your diary accordingly, but not record it as a PB

It is bugging me,i was chuffed when i caught my biggest one 16lb. Not so with this one,was glad to free it up though. And as you say it wouldn't count if it was a record fish. Back to 16lb As you say Cakey if its taken your bait on your own rig in your swim then its your catch.

only if you land it though on the tackle which it took, I can remeber playing a losing a decent fish whci I lost at the net and my mate hooked into it an hour later, he piocked up my line while winding in, nopne of us could ethically claim the fish of course
