I thought I would give the perch in my local pond a go this Autumn/Winter and will be trying with lobworms etc.but I would like to give spinning a thorough work-out but in reading my many books on fishing cannot find many references to spinning particularly up-to-date methods

I suppose I have a rod somewhere that might do the trick but what rod is best if I bought new??Similarly I assume a fixed spool reel is best??

Again, what about line-I cannot imagine I need to use a trace....?

What spinners/plugs are best and how does one cast any distance with them-especially spinners?

I am fairly certain my perch do not run to any size but then they are NEVER fished for so who knows....

Any help appreciated and I'm very willing to learn so basic old fashion stuff as well as latest methods all welcome

In a nutshell -

6½-8 foot  rod casting up to 14 or 16 grams.

Herculine or Power Pro 15lbs resists twisting better.

Fine trace of 15lbs soft wire from Drennan

Lures, Abu Droppen or Reflex. Mepps or Blue Fox - small 6 - 9 grams

You will cast 50 yards or more with these.

Any light spinning rod rated for lures of about 25 g  try will do fine.  Match it with a fixed spool reel loaded with approx 8lb mono (or 20lb braid).  Always use a wire trace if you think Pike might be present (use one of the softer varieties in 15 or 20lb.

As for lures, if you can find any of the Storm Naturalistic Roach or Perch in the smaller sizes  (up to 2 inches)then buy as many as you can afford.  Failing that, try any curly tail grubs or some of the Fox micro jerks such as Micro Rooter or Demon.  casting these lure will be no problem on lght tackle.

If there are definately no pike present ,10-12 ft soft action rod,6lb. line ,small Mepps or 2" floating plug,ABU terminator if you can find any.add large shot about 18"in front to sink to desired depth.fish lobworm and trickle maggots over top then cast to surroundig area, alternatively wander about trying areas close to weed beds ,along bank, and in shaded areas.

Very good article on spinning and bait fsihing for perch by Gary Knowles in this months Coarse Fisherman.Definately worth a look.

My tackle is a 7ft Fox Jigmaster and a size 1000 Shimano reel.Lovely little outfit which would land any bonus Pike that took a fancy.

Had a fair few  perch from my local canal on Ondex spinners in the smaller sizes although they dont cast far.

without doubt the best perch spinner going.

i tend to use my avon rod with them the extra length helps you cast them a bit further.

the sight of a group of lovely big perch following one in is hard to beat.

 line is 30lb braid with a 15lb drennan 7 strand trace .

Staggering!!-I only put this thread on last night at 9pm and seven excellent replies already(well six anyway as I feel really sorry for FH!).

Do any of you people work for a living?

Thanks for some great ideas!!

ps I went fishing today and caught a 7lb12oz wild carp that took 10mins to land on 6lb line-best fight for ages and that includes the wife!!

FH-let me just say that the carp was in pristine condition-not a mark on it and I doubt it had been caught for ages,if ever.It slurped a 2" square of anchored floating crust with a noise that you could have heard 50m away!I shall watch to football tonight with a beer but my mind will be at the lake where I shall be at 7pm tomorrow morning to try and do it all over again-some chance!!!!

Its a dogs life this fishing 4/5 days a week..........I'm just not seeing many people hence this reply....

Had a nice day plugging for perch a couple of weeks ago,had about eight then saw a dark shape following, speeded up a bit and bump,a 2 1/2 pound bream.!!!!had half a dozen bream on little Mepps many years ago on river Shannon and also had Tench on a Scalefry (small fry imitating trout lure),so you never know what may grab hold.

Teecee, your carp sounds incredible!  Most carp have been fished at least five times!

I'll try plugging!  I only have some spinners at the moment though.

it's funny you come to mention this, i formed a cunning plan to catch the next record bream on a fry imitation fly from a certain reservoir trout fishery in southern england a few years ago.

Had to move due to changing jobs before i could put it into effect properly though unfortunately.

I have just started using Callcutta lures and they are tremendous!

Keep an eye out for them...The smaller shads split tails and curl tails are bound to be great Perch lures!!1

Watch this space!!

Back on the perch and spinners thing;

Does anyone have a good reliable supplier for these spinners/plugs??My local tackle shop is almost totally carp orientated with some match gear at the back!!

Always going to be a problem buying without viewing but with the info supplied by you chaps I have a lot to work with for the time being-thanks again!!

I have to say I'm really looking forward to trying for these perch-nice to do something different...........

saw some fox lures the other day that looked bit small for pike so could be ideal for perch, although you can bit a nice lobworm!

My biggest perch was caught whilst lure fishing for pike.....

fox jigmaster rod,30lbs braid,30lbs fox ready made spinning trace and a "herbs dilly" single hook lure.

I think there is a pic of me and the fish in the gallery section???

COPYCAT! You must have heard about Steve Cox on Farmoor, Jason. He had what was belived to be a 20lb+ bream on a fly and it was lost at the net by ................

.

.

.

Peter Stone. He never forgave himself for that.
