I think most experienced anglers will have a mental register of just about every recognised hook and feed bait - I just thought I'd pitch this question out. Is there a generally recognised bait that, for whatever reason, just doesn't seem to work for you or give you any confidence when using it? I seem to have a mental block when using sweetcorn - I'm a very confident and optimistic angler... Except when it comes to sweetcorn. My fishing buddy is a terrific angler, very experienced and successful - but just can't get on with banded pellets.

chic peas mine, never had much luck with them despite being on extensive baiting programmes, catch carp on just about every other particle and mass bait
Ahhh.. Chic peas. Had a similar aversion to them myself for many years, absolutely crap results with them... Until last April. Thought I'd try some flavoured with scopex on a biggish tench lake where boilies dominate - result! I keep a ready supply in my freezer now.

Same with you lark, just never have any success with sweetcorn, also casters,
Flavoured luncheon meat. I've had many fish on plain meat and sometimes if I've plenty left over I'll stick some garlic or tikka powder in a tub with the meat and freeze it till next time. I've never caught on it after adding flavour that I can recall.

Shelf Life Boilies have never had any good results on any of them so far. Also Chic Peas
Chic peas, me too, and thinking about it I find worms tough also and boiles, sweetcorn, bread, dead baits, live baits, cheese, paste, cat meat, dog meat and of course maggots and casters never seem to work!
Cheese paste for me...you lovingly prepare it...present it...and........nowt! I FIRMLY BELEAVE THAT NO ANGLER HAS EVER CAUGHT ANYTHING ON CHEESE PASTE...they just say they do so crap anglers like me don't find out whats REALLY catching....I DONT THINK THATS VERY FUNNY....AND SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!
Andy - I've had the odd season like that! I take it the pellets are going well then? Paul - The flavoured luncheon meat worked for me but purely by accident. I used to fry 'cylinders' of luncheon that had been punched out with an apple corer in a really hot pan to make the outside tough to help it stay on the hook or hair. One day I decided to sprinkle in a couple of oxo cubes. Number one bait for chub now!
Deanos - If someone had asked what I thought would have been top bait in this category I would have said cheese paste. Funnily enough, I've done well with it in years gone by - but loads of people I've known couldn't catch with it and just didn't rate it. The same b*stards that catch on sweetcorn!
 Pellets.......now there's a thought!
Not as a bait, but I have never found that bream like hemp mixed in with groundbait, everything else that swims, except pike & perch seem to like it though. I conducted a prolonged test on Porth Reservoir, which has loads of bream of all sizes, and to my own satisfaction proved the point. They don't shy off hemp but there is not the improvement that you get over plain brown crumb by adding caster, chopped worms, maggots of all sizes, sweetcorn, pellets, fishmeal or liquidised bread

Lamprey don't know why given it lots of chances but not even a single run
Given it`s huge success over the years, why have I NEVER caught anything on bread.
I can only catch on sweetcorn if I dye it red and give it some strawberry flavouring. Never had a bite on the plain yellow stuff.
sweetcorn is a funny one. I have gone through periods where i have taken it out with me regularly and not caught much using it so end up not taking it any longer, then for one reason or another give it a go again and have the best catch i've had in a long time lots of bites larger than average size fish to boot which gives me confidence so start taking it everytime again then it bloody dont work arrrrrggghhh.
Casters. Ive taken them with me time after time and never had what i would call a good days fishing and a good days fishing for me is probably a lot less than some of the top-notch anglers on FM. If i could single out a bait that has served me well this season it would be sweetcorn yellow straight from the tin. Ive caught Carp, bream.tench, roach, grayling, dace and on several different waters i-e lakes rivers and commercials . Fishing with the pole. Method, straight lead and feeder so its worked ok for me but for some reason casters are a no no for me.
Right then!....WHO USES MEAT BALLS? I have fancied having a go with them....but haven't heard much about them as a bait. What do you say then lads????
I had a thing with sweetcorn not working for me and didn't feel confident at all with it, Then one day tried a piece and caught! So after that i was ok with it. Deano, cheesepaste..... IS CRAP FOR ME TOO!!!!!!!!!! the fish i catch don't like it and as for meatballs, yes i've used them but only on a carp water, i split them in half and hair rigged them lowering them into the margins. For casting they are pretty crap!
Hey up Wendy I do sort of wonder that if the fish are on...they are on and thats that! I read on Archie Braddock's site that he uses bits of mackerel for his speci chub fishing, I fancy a go with that! Also next time out I am going to use the hottest west indian peper sauce that Morrisons can sell me to see how it works...or doesn't as the case may be. Hope you are fine...and ready to give me a fishing lesson soon!!!!!!!
