I had been after a light weight, tippy rod for trotting and for silvers on still waters for some time, but found that most of the ‘match’ rods now available were the beefed up models more suitable for the commercials. I read some favourable reviews of this rod and decided to buy one. I’m generally well pleased. Its 12 foot in length but has an extension to take it to 13’ 6”. It’s a dream to hold at 12 foot, and only a tad heavier at 13’ 6”, but still light enough to hold in your hand all day. It has a nice, crisp, tippy action and great for hitting shy bites. Wouldn’t like to hook a double figure fish on it , or steer a serious rod bender away from a snag, but is great to enjoy a net of roach, dace, perch, skimmers and small chub without feeling you are over gunned. The finish is pretty good and I’m traditional enough to appreciate the long cork handle. It’s marketed as being especially suitable for centre pins (the butt ring is closer to the reel seat than on most conventional match rods), but I’ve used my closed face on it with no problems. Its RRP is around ninety five quid, but shop around on the web and you find cheaper. I picked mine up from tacklebargains for £79.99. Only one, albeit small complaint, the rod bag is a flimsy nylon job and after a few trips out already needs replacing. I like to travel light and don’t like hauling a rod holdall around. What ever happened to decent cloth rod bags that you could tie your net handle and rod rest to?
