Hi,  I'm looking to get my first fly rod aND i'm stuck as to what to buy...

i could buy separate pieces, although that would be more costly, and i don't really know the standards

2nd choice is one of the packs on the market, i've seen one on ebay for 50 quid, but my first instinct is that it could be absolute crap... i've seen a shakespeare kit (see link below) and seen positive comments on this site about their quality...

 any advice?

 http://www.bosfish.co.uk/PRODUCTS/outfits/ss384fly.htm

I'd be finishing parts of the Tyne and Wear Rivers in the north-east and Hopefully progressing to Tweed (although i'm yet to look into permit costs etc...)

Assuming it's trout that you are after I would suggest a rod in the order of 8 1/2' to 9' with an AFTM rating of 5 most current purveyors of rods will have something useful be it shakespeare or diawa or any of the other importers.Go for something in the middle of the price range there are plenty of very adequate rods in this price band.

More important is the choice of a decent fly line snowbee do decent ones as indeed do shakespeare in the worcestershire range the upper end of the quality market is the cortland 444 series.

You will want a floating line the profile you choose is up to you double tapers are great for shorter range presentation and when one end of the line wears out you can reverse it and use the other end. Weight forward lines are better for longer range casting.

Reels are of less importance in fly fishing and money can be saved here.

The new breed of tapered polyleaders are a good buy as they transfer energy efficiently simply attach a tippet and away you go.

If you want to discuss this in much greater detail you can send me a pm and I will give you a contact number for me and give you a great deal more detailed information and save myself a lot of typing!
