Right just been on my first proper chub fishing session. Used a Korum Neoteric 12' quiver. Had a 5+ on it but it just felt a little over gunned being 1.75lb tc. This rod is great for big river Barbeling though. I am thinking that something around 1.25lb would be perfect for feeder fishing liquidised bread in a relatively small river. Any Chub enthusiasts out there care to pass on a bit of advice.

The old JW Avon was always a good rod - not got the new one that's out now - had mine a couple of years

Usually use a Drennan Super Specialist Duo, 1,5lb for my chubfishing. Find that testcurve ideal for bigger chub. Sometimes - if I`m on smaller rivers or don`t expect big fish - I use a 1lb Excalibur. Great fun but a little too weak for chub above 4 pounds.

There are plenty of avon rods out there, i've got the Korum, greys and jw avon. The JW AVON is perfect for small river work and being only 11ft easier to get into small swims, if i am fishing for small river chub on the lead it's first out the bag every time. I would maybe step up to a 1.5lb if the swims are very snaggy.

I have had the JW old rod, and have the newer version, an excellent chub rod, also at 11ft its better for smaller rivers where the swims are overgrown etc. Now if you want a REALLY good chub rod (not quite gunned up for bigger feeders) the TFG River & Stream is a beautiful little rod. Soft action, very slim blank, built in quiver (2oz I believe), it comes with an Avon top, now painted white and used for night fishing, but will also be good for taking chub on floating baits in summer. The John Wilson rod is a good workhorse, easily handles barbel, carp also with the Avon top, but the TFG is a brilliant little rod. If you really get into your chub fishing...get them both over time.

Hi Lord Paul, www.totalfishinggear.co.uk Its £70 squids, the build quality is excellent, the action is brilliant. I had five chub with it the first time out, a couple over the four pound mark, the playing action is just brilliant, no chance of a hook pull, you can feel the fish right through to the handle. The bites on the Avon tip pull well down into the rod, I would say the Avon tip is around 3 to 4 oz if measured against a normal quiver tip. The delivery from tfg is bang on....if you like chub or roach fishing, its about perfect. Also it is reviewed on FM if you have a track through the posts. Lord Paul, sell the old girl to Saudi Arabia as a camel jockey....but get one, yal love it!

Hi Deanos Think you've sold me on the TF Gear rod Deanos. Read through the reviews and sounds perfect for what I want. Are you getting back handers off Matt Hayes for the glowing writeup mate? I am sure he could spare a couple of quid lol

Looks good Deanos Turns to wife "Pack your bags love - you're off to Saudi"

Hi Nick, No backhanders , but just good gear and good delivery. Let me know how your chub fishing goes as I want to spread my wings a bit this next season and try some new waters. If you get the rod, let me know what you think about it. regards Deanos.

I've got the TFG too and it’s a great rod for the money. I wasn’t too fond of the single supplied 2 oz quiver tip however; as I found it to be of the fast taper variety which IMHO are not best suited to Chub fishing. I remedied this by sanding down a Drennan slow taper 1.5oz quiver tip (available from most good tackle shops), which matches the rod action nicely. Also for those tighter swims, I recently purchased a 10 ft Preston Innovations Carbonative Mini Carp rod. Crap name but it’s a great little Chub rod. Again fast taper tips supplied but it will take the Drennan tips without alteration. Neil

I use an 11ft quiver rod for River Dane chubbing but fancy a smaller 10ft one. I believe the Preston rod is expensive, so is there any cheaper ones I could have a look at?.

Hi Guys, had a waggle with a Fox 11' Duo Lite Barbel 1.5lb at Climax Tackle and had to buy it. Seems just the job. Comes with both glass and carbon tips which are very sensitive. Went on the Aire, Saturday and blanked so haven't christened it yet but it handled a small liquidised bread feeder just fine. I would say it is just the right length for the smaller rivers.
