Forum Updates - Help Guide

Imagine a friend tells you he's bought a new rod by company X for £25 - company X is a very unfashionable company - their market is the cheap and nasty end of the market and their products are generally regarded as poor by the angling world.

You laught at your friend for buying the rod but after a fishing session with him, where you try the rod out, you realise that this is a quality product and if it was made by one of the big name companies and not finished in a bright blue colour it would cost over £100.

The question is - Do you buy one of these rods and put up with the knowing looks of other anglers thinking "crap rod" and try to convince them of the quality or due you simply not buy one.

Just buy it and think to yourself how smart you've been!

If it does the job and does it well you are on a winner.

It seems to be happening more and more these days.

Myself, I wouldn't dream of paying some of the jnflated "snob value" prices put on "named" tackle.  There's plenty of stuff out there that does the same job as well as and in some cases better.

Colin

interesting replies so far - the tackle tarts may view it differently

Quite agree, I have a few friends (arseholes) who use Sages,£500plus,  they never catch anymore than me on my £25  Shakespeare Sage and Onion rod

Of course, you can always purchase a (reasonably affordable, but strictly limited edition) TickleTackle Hyper Exclusive Gear sticker to instantly upgrade your cheap as chips  rod to a piece of equipment that will turn your mates green with envy..................

I use Greys rods which in my opinion are every bit as good as Sage and Loomis. Their GT top of the range rod is probably better than a Sage for less than 1/2 the price.

I have a Sage of course but I acquired it second hand by using a bit of guile.

I have nothing against buying second hand by the way.

I have no problem with a piece of kit that does a workman like job, regardless of the badge on it.

If it is a good rod i would use it.

I still use a £10 float rod brought from a supermarket for small stuff on my local river, it has a nice action, but I know if I hit anything big it would probably smash up.

Why do people pay these prices?

Just imagine what they must go through, sat waiting for there £200 bite alarms to sound a bite on there £150 rods whilst sat on ther £100 bed chair. When on the other side of the bank a chap is catching plenty on a cheap float rod sat on a deck chair, this must happen often.

Come on, if you need to spend these ludicrous amounts of money to catch fish theres something wrong.  I have always caught fish, and good ones, on budget tackle.

I say you look good when your catching fish, and if people put there noses up at your tackle then thats their problem.

If, and only if, you have a problem worrying about what others might say, do what the so called experts recommend and paint it matt black and no one will know the difference. Thats what I did anyway

You beat me to that one Graham.

You could go one further and hand write on the rod, hand made, custom built.

By the time they think about looking at your tackle its too late. Those judgments have already been made as they glance at clothing, boat race, and general appearance....no matter how impressive your tackle is; it is virtually impossible to overturn that initial instant decision.

Bit busy getting ready to fish the Ribble with your friend and mine from Warrington AND Morespiders...so not sure if the above is reply to your thread or that article in Cosmopolitan that Corkers drew our attention to...it probably applies to both

Does the same go for brand of Stillton?

Yes Matt - as long as it's smelly I'll eat it - that also applies to cheese

I have recently discovered a brand called Country Helmet. A local farmer makes it himself.

i look better doing it though

there will always be those that moan about tackle tarts, usually because they are jealous. its the same with cars, houses, and underpants.

stop worrying about what other people do and concentrate on enjoying what you're doing - you'll live longer

It doesn't matter how shiney your tackle is, i'll only get jealous if someones catching and i'm not. You don't need to look good to be good, vaine comes to mind.

Good points Froths, all i will ad is that if the cheap stuff was all i had to use then i would use it rather than not go fishing.

Uncle Dave has read this post by Spiders and has just sent me an e-mail and asked me to post this reply :

Ask Spiders... does this include Uncle Dave who took him to the Bahamas?

Ask Spiders... who caught four times as many Bonefish as he did?

Ask Spiders... who caught a 14-06 and an 11-08?

Ask Spiders... who can put a full line out against the wind with a Saltwater Sage to catch the big ones?

Ask Spiders... why he gave up in a slight breeze with his sage and onion?

Ask Spiders... why he asked the guide to return to the dock so he could sit in the car for the rest of the day because he felt cold? (Bahamas April 83 degrees)

Ask Spiders... who returned him to the dock then went back out in the cold weather and caught another double?

Ask Spiders... who fishes the dry fly on rivers and pays out the line from the reel as in long trotting?

Ask Spiders...who tried to push the fly line through the rings to cast further?

Ask Spiders... why he produces more bullsh*t than a Texas Longhorn ranch?

Ask Spiders...who talks the talk but crawls the walk?

Like I said if he is right then I know where there is a bloody houseful.

Best regards,

Uncle Dave.
