i will fishing a small pond with depths up to 15 feet for tench.i am going to try the polaris as i like to watch a float.can anybody advise the best way to attach a feeder to this float.

The business end is exactly the same as when you're feeder fishing. Just put a small shot about 4ft above the knot to stop the float getting anywhere near the hook when casting and thats about it really. Superb piece of kit though, first used it in Ireland a few years back with great success. I prefer to watch a float as well so I'm a convert and its especially useful where theres an uneven depth

As an afterthought Allan, if its a small pond why don't you use a slider they're simple to use and then you can feed to the float

Allan,
Don't worry about the slider it's a great method but with the polaris you don't have to worry about a stop knot and finding your depth - the polaris does that for you. The only drawback I can see is that tench do like to lift a bait up and you get a corrisponding lift bite. I've always found that waiting until the float burries after the lift gets a fish whereas hitting the lift doesn't. I would wait until the polaris folds flat or goes down until striking, but experimentation is the key.

thanks for all the replys,i thought the polaris would be better than the slider,as i could fish it with a feeder in the setup.if i fished a short hooklength i could get the feed close to the hookbait.

another idea is to use the thinner polaris floats or the canal versions as sliders, have done this in Eire and bagged up on close in fish, tench and bream on the nearer lines.

Use a water knot to create a paternoster and keep the hooklength short so it stays near the feeder, that way you are fishing directly over the feed. If the water is so deep then a cage feeder is useless. I like the drennan open end feeders in green plastic. They are sensibly weighted and hold a good amount of groundbait.

having just taken up fishing, would the above method of attaching the feeder make the fish feel the weight of the feeder,as it is fixed to the line with a knot. would it be better just to let the feeder run up the line.so when the fish takes the bait it would not feel anything.

thanks for all the help.

Polaris floats are absolutely brilliant with bite indication at the float showing before any registration at the rod tip. No worries about plumbing the depth of swims either.

I tend to fish the polaris as a running set up and I put the float on the line followed by either a bomb or feeder attached to a quick change running clip and then slide a buffer bead on next to stop the bomb/feeder followed by a swivel tied using a palomar knot. The bead is then slid over the top eye of the swivel. A quick change clip is then attached to the bottom eye of the swivel and a hooklink can be attached to the clip with a piece of silicone tube placed over the clip to prevent tangles. You need to experiment with the bomb / feeder to guage the minimum amount of weight needed to cock the float correctly. When fish are feeding confidently it doesnt seem to matter how much weight you use. With the rod pointing at the float and a fairly tight line cocking the float this often has a bolt effect with fish hooking themselves so you need to make sure you are not too far away from your rod or you could lose it.

A great and much ignored method that is in my opinion much better and close to medium range than a alarm set up during short sessions.

an advantage the slider has over the polaris is depth indication ie over bars and ...drop offs  but clipped up a polaris is useful piece of kit .after plumbing depth
