Methinks you're answering your own question without realising it. I have a Shimano 5000 (not one you'd like eh? ) with two spools, one spooled with a clear fluorocoated line and one with a black line. I wanted to use the black one at night and the clear one through the day, but sometimes I forgot and used the black one through the day. You know, I don't think it mattered one damned bit, I never caught anything anyway.

Seriously, I think we're guided by what the manufacturers tell us to use with a little aid from their highly sponsored 'consultants' who get their gear for free anyway.

EDIted bit: should add, the one barbel I did catch last year was on a JRC line, very dark green.
