When actually fishing, you need to protect your eyes and head. I wear sunglasses and a hat. The path of the fly through the air can be difficult to control when beginning fly fishing, a faulty back cast could result in the fly hitting the angler at high speed.

Initially I would use leaders no longer than the length of the rod, and would avoid those large flies which are weighted with lead or big gold beads.
