I'm looking to use a 1.5lb test barbel Rod I was thinking of using 12lb main to 10lb hooklength, I'll be fishing the stretch at coalport I'm looking for advice on the amount of weight I'll need to hold bottom with an open end feeder. I've been down to the stretch to see what it's like regarding accessibility etc, it looks like it's extremely pacey. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know the stretch you mention so its difficult to say how much weight you may need.

I would start of with 2 to 2.5 ozs and see how it goes not forgetting to let enough line out to form a bow in your line as this will help you to hold bottom.

Cheers crow I will try that, thanks for the tip about letting line out. The stretch is behind. the brewery inn at coalport do you have any experience of that spot?

I often find that casting a little upstream, combined with Crow's excellent advice on letting out a bow can really work wonders when you're trying to hold position with a feeder in a flow. I'm not a physicist but at the end of the day it's about how much force the flow can transmit to the feeder. Trying to fish "tight" to it will always see the feeder bouncing off away from where you want to fish...

good luck. Its an area i'd love to spend some time on but the distance is a bit too much.

cheers

I would step up to a 1.75 rod unless you have already chosen one.

You will find the other a bit light in a push and I would suggest a 3 oz feeder the best bet for normal use as the stretch is a bit snaggy in places and you need to hold bottom plus prevent any rolling. Don't be shy with the casting in the first hour and get some bait in including some 10ml in your mix if on pellet

All other advice sound.

I've got a1.5lb Drennan Martin bowler barbel Rod I'll be using a Shimano 6000 sized bait runner reel with 12lb Daiwa sensor to 11lb reflo power. I've also ordered some 5oz Korum open ended feeders should the 4oz not be enough. I realise I'm going to have to swing a feeder of this size rather than a proper cast. Like you said Graham I'll not hold back with the amount of "casting" to get some feed in the swim, I've got a bucket load of hemp in the freezer along with a 20 kg sack of brown crumb in the garage do you think I should mix in 10 mm pellets with the hemp and crumb or would you advise me to use only pellet. Also forgot to add that I'll be using halibut pellets haired to a Drennan specialist hook but not sure of the size yet? Should I use a bigger pellet than the 10mm loose feed?

Steve. You shouldn't need to go more than 3 oz feeder as dont forget if its packed with say hemp crumb and hali groundbait it will weigh at least 6oz.

For most 1.5 rods thats plenty even if you cast underarm as I mostly do.

I would mix about 1/2 hemp and ground hali with same crumb adding some green lipped mussel juice ( van d eyne ) and water to dampen. Put about 6 x 10 ml elips per feeder.

Sonu do a ready made hemp hali mix.

Ideally you want the feeder to empty over about 5 mins so make sure its damp enough to stay in.

Size 8 hook is perfect for 2 hair rigged (super glued) elips or a drilled 10 /12 mm one.

Good luck but wait till 16th june!!!
