Bristol Avon Rivers Trust (BART) recently completed the final stages of a project led by the Riverside Angling Club following initial planning advice from BART. The project was designed to improve the spawning potential of a stretch of the river at Cowbridge near Malmesbury.

'The club raised funds to enable the cattle drink to be fenced off and the subsequent in-stream works were completed by BART and the Wild Trout Trust with a financial contribution from the Barbel Society which does tremendous work across the country encouraging similar improvements to be made'

All species will benefit from this work but reports of small barbel from the boulder weir area are already coming in.

Some great looking river photos Bobby. Only fished up at Malmesbury once (by the fire station) and whilst I found that cut of the river quite slow it was full of healthy populations of roach, dace and trout. Hopefully the works undertaken will help Barbel and indeed other species thrive.

It was a big shame for barbel anglers watching the B.Avon decline. I hear the all round fishing is still quite superb though, it's a very similar story with the Teme. Cyclical or sinister? Time will tell, hopefully we'll find out and the barbel begins to thrive in a nicely balanced environment once more. Fingers crossed eh.
