Default Daiwa Regal verses Shimano GT Baitrunner

My existing reel is a Shimano Baitrunner but I'm putting together another rod and reel so my lad can use my old set. Would have just bought another Baitrunner but a friend has recommended a Daiwa. Never used a Daiwa reel but I have heard they have a good reputation but are expensive. What do people think? Got about £75 - £100 to play with and am going to use it for barbel on the Ribble.

I had the original Regal x Reels when i first started Carp Fishing, a good few years ago now, they were ok, but they really didn't have many frills for the money i paid for them, but they did the job.

I would personally go for the Okuma Epix Pro BaitFeeder Reels if i was to choose a reel now that didn't break the bank, but, had a good all round reputation for performing.

They retail for around £60.00p, if it was just for Barbel Fishing i would probably chose the EPB 40 OR THE EPB 50.

Here is a link with some additional specifications for you to browse over.

Cheshire Fishing - Okuma Epix Pro Baitfeeder EPB30, EPB40, EPB50, EPB60, EPB65 Reel

Good luck with what ever you end up choosing.

Daiwa are pretty good, the Regal BRi would be ok for starters

Or move up to the better model for £10 more

I have only ever bought Shimano reels including baitrunners, but the last reel I bought was a diawa 2508 match reel for a change, its a nice reel to use, however if I had to fault diawa, I wish they had the push button spool release like shimano,I can envisage changing spools, and the screw top drag and spool attachment dropping in the river, or losing it somehow.£££££££££

I've been using Regals for the past 15 years and I can't fault them. They are just starting to show their age, but I can't really complain!

They do have a lovely loud click on the drag/baitrunner which I like.

I fish for barbel with both reel's, both are very good, though I am amazed at how much the regal flexi's when playing fish.
If I had to pick one of them, it would be the shimano that I would keep.

You should be able to pick a pair of shimano 5010's up on ebay for that.

POLO is an unknown quantity at this point
Default reels

It's funny this but I swear by Shimmano reels but love Diawa rods. I have two Shimmano 5010 baitrunners and 2 of the old heavy feeder Diawa Tornado Z porky pig range when fishing for Barbel. I find that the clutch adjustments of the Shimmano more easily accessable when playing a fish and the front drag system on Diawa's awkward to use. Plus thepush button is better by far.

For a few pound more a Shimano 4000D would be a better choice. Its the one without the big handle too.
