Default Whip on the canal! Any Tips Please!?

Hi All!

Been Googling all morning looking for as much info as possible about canal fishing with a 4m whip. It's my first post so please, be gentle!

Done a bit of fishing in the past but only for a laugh, not really been bothered what (even if) I catch, just an excuse to go fishing with 'the lads'!

But now I'm going fishing with with 'The Lad' and i'm running out of talent very quickly!

Can anyone suggest any good whip rig set ups and techniques for catching as many fish as possible!? The Lad isn't too bother what he catches or how big it is but starts losing patience very quickly! As long as he's pulling fish out it keeps him occupied and lets me get a bit of fishing done too!

Went to the canal in Hyde yesterday and we caught a few between us...

He got the Perch, I got the Roach and the other silver (Think its a Dace but I'm most probably wrong!)

Cheers!

get down your local tackle shop and see what they have to offer. most 4m whips are less than £10 so you wont be breaking the bank. a couple of extra quid for some pre-tied pole rigs and you'll be away - good idea to pick up some extra hooks and line for when you want to replace the original.

i'd really recommend getting an elasticated whip, just in case something larger comes along.

my kids have been using mitchell 4m (non elasticated) whips for a couple of years and they're great for instant fishing. i just set em up and off they go. had some lovely sessions on the thames recently with lots of bleak, dace, roach and minnows (some real monsters for minnows!)....i also use one when i'm looking for livelies.

as for technique...plump up for depth and start set there, couple of maggots on the hook, sprayed maggot over the top. bulk the shot up round the float and you'll get loads of bites on the drop...shallow up if you're not hitting em. for the larger fish bulk that shot lower down to get the bait down thru the water quicker and feed feed feed...works for my 8 year old

Both got a 4m whip each (neither elasticated though)! Less tangles, less set up time, more fishing! Just been reading about setting up rigs and saw someone saying put a shot above as well as below the float?? Never heard of this before! Wouldn't that just tip the float over??

Just a tiny "back-shot" above the float to sink the line.
If there's an awkward wind, use a small waggler pattern.

Hi Bruce

Firstly welcome to the forums (suspect I'm just up the road from you in Glossop as you've been on the Hyde canal).

One thing I would say about ready made rigs is that I've struggled to find lighter weight ones (in a similar boat - my 4 year old lad caught his first fish, a roach, last week on a 3m whip), which you would need for canals - they all seem to be carp rigs. Resorted to setting up my own in the end! Not difficult and adds to the experience I find.

Good luck to you both.

I'm confused about how to feed crumb at four M the article above says pinch the crumb and then throw it out or feed with a pot , if I try that the crumb just floats , can someone tell me what I am foing wrong ?

I get the instant bites with the punched bread but after a few fish the swim always drys up , I think i am either feeding to big a ball of crumb in order to make it sink or using too many casters in an attempt to circumvent the issues with crumb.

Benny,

Are you making the punch crumb a little too dry?

I prefer to use shop bought punch crumb and wet it with a spray bottle until I can just get it to hold together to ut in by hand, never a pot b.t.w.

Also, i prefer to use pinkie rather than caster, but thats just a personal thing.

I try to only use a small ball the size of a small walnut and feed on a rotational basis like i mention in the article.

You will find it a very good 'instant' method but it will dry up after about maybe 30 to 40 minute. then I'd go in with a wet groundbait to give a cloud, still keep the pinkie going in and swap to a large maggot for the hook, or maybe a caster.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does Peter thanks , if i adjust the rig length so that small fish come comfortably to hand then unless Ii fish 7 M out i.e. 4M whip 3 M rig length then I have too long a rig length.

BTW I love the simplicity of this method I have managed a few really nice tench off it on the canal and a bucketful of roach sometimes too.

---------- Post added at 13:59 ---------- Previous post was at 13:56 ----------

So I should make the crumb like a stiff method mix so it can be formed into balls and then thrown in accurately.

I think my problem is that often I don't give the feed enough time to work , assume the fish aren't there and go searching the swim.
