Chris, 3.9m is 13 ft - not long enough for anything other than fishing in the margins. It sounds as if you have a whip. These are intended for whipping (hence the name) ouit snall fish - such as bleak - at speed in matches, using fine tackle. As such, it is not *(repeat not) suitable for carp around 2-3 pounds. I'd keep it for its intended purpose and get a 1-11 metre pole for carping. You can pick something reasonable up for around £100.

Another question about my 4 metre whip ! The whip I understand is only intended for margins ! Poblem is my favourite lake has loads of 2/3 pound carp and the tend to lurk in the margins and enjoy maggots and casters intended for rudd and small roach can I do anything To my whip so I do not get broken off by these little torpedo carp other than buy a real pole as I am skint and just going for a days fishing nearly wipes me out for a week ! And saving up for a pole will take me at the moment the best part of a year and mean no fishing for that amount of time . IDEAS PLEASE

There are some waters that are suited to whip fishing Chris and others that arent. Yours sounds very much like the latter. You dont need to either save up for a pole or use a whip mate. Theres loads of budget priced, (40-60 quid new) very usable rods that would suit you spot on for banging those pasties out.

Using a whip on your water is just going to resuit in you leaving terminal gear dragging round in some carps mouth at best and at worst your gear plus half your whip.

Thanks for the responce ! I already have a 13 ft match carp waggler rod that I enjoy using on this water .I have managed to bank a surprise 13 pound common on the rod .I was casting across the lake using a 2 aaa waggler and a size 16 hook using a maggot and caster as hookbait and this fish leapt out of the water and took the bait in the air I do not think it knew that it was hooked for a few seconds as it did nothing ! I also did not realise it had taken the bait! I just wondered where my float had gone so I started realing in then we both realised something was a bit odd.The fish took off parralell to the bank .and then it turned and came back toward me as it got in front of me it stopped and came toward me very slowly then ran into a load of reeds where I thought it would snap me off! As I was only using 5 pound mainline and a 16 with a 4 pound link by this time I had realised that this was not a pastie so I opted for a wait and see tactic so I put the rod back into the rests and undid the drag on the reel then I sat down and lit a ciggy. A couple of minutes later my float re appeared in front of me about 20 feet out in the swim ! So I put out the fag and just watched the float which was now going slowly back out toward the middle of the lake. So then I just picked up the rod put my finger gently on the spool grabbed my net and the fish just turned around and basicly just swum into the landing net without any more probs ! It was only when it was in the that I realised its size as I has not really seen it until then Sothe waggler rod was fine ! but I was A bit lucky with that fish I admit !

A way of really getting a shedfull and a lot of fun Chris is to fish a pole float on your waggler rod very close in at dead depth on the paste. Dont cast it, just a gentle underarm swing. Its a method I use a hell of a lot in the summer and it really bags up.

If its windy sit with your back to the wind for this method as the wind will blow your pole float dragging the hook out of the paste. Make sure the drag is set to soft on your reel toobecause your very direct to the fish and it will surprise you at some of the beasts under your feet.

HEY RISQUE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA THE LAKE I FISH IS VERY SMALL AND IN LATE SPRING THE BEST FUN IN TOWN IS USING FLOATING PELLETS AS THE MID SIZE SMALL CARP UP TO 10 lbs LOVE THE THINGS AND WILL PLAY ALL DAY. ON A WAGGLER ROD THAT IS ALSO GREAT FUN ! AND THIS SMALL LAKE RESPONDS WELL TO STALKING WITH BIGGER FLOATING DOG BIKKIES ! LAST SEASON I WAS AT THE END OF A SESSION AND JUST PINGING OUT A FEW BISCUITS WITH MY CATAPULT AND EVERY TIME ONE HIT THE SURFACE A FISH TOOK IT IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS ! ALSO FLOATING CRUST WORKS WELL SO ANY NEW METHOD IS WELL WORTH A SHOT I HAVE BEEN USING FLOATING HOT DOG SAUSAGES THEY WORK WELL ! BUT THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR SUGGESTION WILL GIVE IT A TRY CHEERS FOR THAT
