I've noticed that some tackle dealers, local and on-line, do combination deals - rod plus reel, sometimes with some line thrown in. In the experience of members, are such deals good ways of buying tackle sets which will go well together, or is it just a way of unloading some gear which is taking a lot of shifting?

Could be a case of selling the cheaper end gear that those who have been into fishingforsometimewill not give a second look- but if you are new to the sport or indeed new to a discipline of angling (ie never tried spinning before but fancy a go at it) then they can be a good, cheap way to get a taste with out spending a fortune.

The best way would be to ask an expericened angler tolook over the tackle but tell them to bear in mind the price and ask "Is it good value for the money".

If a youngster wants to take up fishing there's no point their parent going out and spending £100s on gear and then the kid packs in after a few time.

Better to spend £60 on a rod andsreel and some line and floats, £10 on a landing net and handle - then if the kid doesn't like fishing you've not lost too much and if thekid gets into itbig time then there is plenty of tiem to upgrade.

Best advice is to go to a tackle shop and ask for advice and tell them your budget, yes there is the chance that the shop will look to empty your wallet but stick to your budget and try elsewhere.

Hope this helps

A reight good bit of advice that Lord Paul

Bennets of Sheffield do quite a few outfits that look quite good to get you started in various styles of angling. There's loads on the website.

There's also Decathlon sports that put together various combos.

ir depends on how much you spend, you get the cheap rods and reels, you will also find the big expensive brands also do the combos, matching rod to reel.

Yeah, I was thinking more on the lines of 'starter kits', but there are many 'deals' on well known brands. ie buy rod XXX for only £49.99 and get reel YYYY for half price.

I would say it's a good deal if you get teh kit you want for a price your happy with.

Thanks very much for all your advice lads.

As a non-carp angler on a budgetwho fishes his local commercials etc. for hopefully tench and roach, etc. could anyone suggest a combination of rod and reel which won't bankrupt me yet will give reasonable satisfaction and service, please?

As always, thanks very much for your time and expertise.
