Guys,

Any help/advice on the following would help. I am looking at a twin top fishing rod that would enable me to choose between Float or Light Feeder as required. Have searched and found the John Wilson Quiver Avon Rod, but feel that this is a bit out of my price range. Another set up is the Ron Thompson Godfather Twin top which is in my price range. Are there any others available.

Along the same lines with the Reel. Have found the John Wilson 3 in 1 reel which looks good, are there any others around.

Just to clarify "Price Range"I have worked out roughly how often I am going to use it, and where.

Richie

Richie. Go for the John Wilson, this will give you 4 rods for the price of one, can be fished at 11foot or 13 foot float, or 11 foot or 13 foot quiver. These rods now sell for only £ 64.99. See Premier Shops at side of this page,Tackle 2u.com, also look at the Review Section. Have one of these rods , three weeksago had a 8lb Barbel on the Quiver. This week purchased the Barbel Version.

I have a Shimano Exage which I use with a John Wilson Quiver avon and find it to be an excellent reel and reasonably priced. The rod is great too btw but youve already spotted that.

Ritchie, I have to agree with Tony H. The Wilson is a fine and adaptable bit of kit (I have 2 plus the Barbel version).

Also have a look at the WMAC shop (West Midlands Angling Centre). They do a Pro GraphiteAvon Quiver System rod (11 - 13ft) and I bought one only to find it was the SAME blank as the Wilson (but cheaper). You can get one of these for under £50. Wouldn't be without my Wilsons - incredibly versatile.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Using your advice I will probably go along the linesof the John Wilson Avon Quiver Rod, or the Pro Graphite (thanks Phil).

With regards to the reel, I have come across the Shimano Catana 2500 RA. Looks like a good reel for the price.Use Shimanos for sea fishing and cannot fault them.

Once again, thanks for the advice. Tight Lines.

Richie, spookily enough I have a Catana 2500 RA which is an incredibly light reel which I use on a Drennan 13ft Competition Match, which is a very light rod. The balance is good.

I would suggest the 2500 is too small for feeder fishing or, indeed, anything you are likely to do with an Avon type rod. I would step up to a 3500 or 4000 size reel with this type of rod. The Catana 2500 is a very good reel for the price but it might be a little under gunned for this type of work.

Update. Have just managed to pick up a new Shakespeare Powerplay 040 reel for £25. Looks good and will provide feedback on first use. Unable to find a Catana in any local shops.

Still hav'nt decided on rod yet.

I'll echo, that as a starting point the JW avon would be a good choice. Mine still get regular use. If cost is an issue, there's usually plenty on e-bay. I know a number of anglers who feel the earlier model is as good (if not better) than the latest ones!

Good luck
