The holy flake

Posted 14-07-2009 at 19:16 by Chris Hammond ( RSPB ACA PAC}

I'm on a mission to catch some huge rudd from a drain. They take floating crust well enough, and that will be my first line of attack.

I tried an experiment today. I made a white loaf up in my bread making machine, but made it strawberry flavoured. It has worked perfectly, with a good rugged crust, with a full on strawberry smell, and paste that kneads into a lovely textured flake bait.

    One old trick I used many years ago when fishing for rudd that were almost always 30 yards or more from the bank, was to make up balls of groundbait and stick hookbait size crusts in the middle of them. Then catapult the groundbait balls out, which when they broke down, released to crusts to the surface to attract the rudd.

    Good luck with the rudd mission Chris, and post a few pictures in your blog if you get one or two.

    LOL I have to admit Graham this was a misfire. I tried posting to the 'Holy Flake' thread on the General forum and got a message saying something about 'filed in uncategorized'. I wondered where my post had gone. II must have pressed the clicked on the wrong tab when replying to the thread. I only noticed that I had posted this as it shows up on the main page as the latest blog entry.

    Thanks for the rudd tip. Fortunately these fish are only a few feet away at any time.

    I don't know if you noticed the post on the thread in question, but this is one my mate asked me to photograph yesterday. It was a flipping nightmare as the sun was intense and I just could not completely eliminate some burn out on the fish's highlights. Any tips?

    What I usually do Chris is get the subject's back to the sun and use a shot of fill-in flash - just stick a hanky or tissue over the flash to diffuse it a little. If you position the person right you can get some lovely highlights around them.

    That's a cracking fish by the way.
