Bashed by Bass....

After watching the 5th wicket go down, I decided to stop watching - it might stop us losing wickets (note.... It didn't, just not as quickly!). I've always got sandeel in my freezer, and had got some peeler earlier as I fancied a low tide trip. Whilst I was picking them up, I noticed that there was a bit of swell running with an onshore wind, so I decided against the rock mark and headed to the estuary instead.

Heading off to the rocks on the right, you can see why it can be a good spot...

A couple of people were spinning where I wanted to be - you get a nice big eddy as the tide starts running, and a nice big gully between the shore and a sandbank - so I started off a bit to the left of where I wanted.

Bait is peeler or sandeel - rig kept simple as you're fishing over rock and weed.

And rods lobbed out 50yds or so - the water is only a few feet deep, but that won't bother the bass!

The spinners moved on (but not before performing a couple of their best hits) so I moved into the "prime" spot. Bites were fairly forthcoming - really good hard pulls, but could I hook them? I tried striking at twitches, picking the rod up and waiting to feel it pulling, leaving the tip bouncing - and still couldn't hit them. Bigger hooks, pennels..... nothing. I can only assume they were small school bass grabbing the bait. The bites dried up as the eddy dissapeared, so I moved, but couldn't find them again - just another "un-missable" bite missed! So back to the car, radio on to listen to the cricket post-mortem but was pleasantly suprised to find we were about to draw the match - almost felt like a win

Still, Jay's got cricket tomorrow at possibly the most picturesque ground in the UK, which backs onto the estuary, so I might pop down with some plugs..... got to do something to catch a fish - that's 2 blanks in the last week!
